Peninsula Malaysia Makan Trip 2.5 – Part 1 – Day 1, Pocket Pizza & Pork Lard Popiah

Yippee! Its holiday time again and since there’s a long break, I had decided on the 11th hour to go ahead and do a partial Peninsula Malaysia Makan Trip. I had wanted to organise part 3 of the trip to complete the whole south but because of budget plus time constraints, I had decided to do a 2.5 version of it, this time covering Melaka and parts of Johor.

I managed to gathered a bunch of MPs to join my trip at the last minute… no no… not member of parliament but MP = makan pals la hehehe :P. But because of the last minute nature, I have part time kaki-s joining in Melaka, some meeting in Johor and some meeting even later in Johor. Ok, let’s not get into details here, I will just confused myself :P.

So on Raya’s eve, we head down to Melaka after our half day work and met up with Sky, our Melaka tour guide for some good makan. Hmm… not sure if I should mention about our little highway peanuts n incident here, hehe… better not, I might get wallop later for this :P.

We wanted to go to Ming Sate Hut to whack some pork satay and was told that it closes at 6pm. We reached there at about 5.45-5.50pm but was told that they are closing up already. Our reaction was… huh? In KL, most shop won’t refuse business and would usually serve the last customer that walked in at 6? Maybe the lifestyle here is more laid back, I mean, there are stalls I know that opens at 2pm, close at 5pm and a list of others that start their business at odd hours.

So, feeling a little disappointed, we opt for the laksa nearby  which is also closed! Then Miharu suggested the laksa 88 at Jonkers and guess what… its closed too! Gosh… all these Malaccans taking us to all the wrong places! Anyhow, since we are in Jonkers… Sky decided to take us to Coconut House to get something to eat first as our next stop are wantan noodles at Jalan Temenggong or they refer to as the Bukit Cina Wantan Mee stall.

Coconut House is converted from one of those old baba-nyonya house into a modern cafe, its on the same row as Puri Hotel and just opposite Baba House. My first impression is very good, I like the way the place is being designed, with very cosy and old days feel furniture. The first part are indoor seating area follow by an open roof courtyard with small tables and a bar.

This place serve mainly Italian and is well known for their pocket pizza. Its not cheap, RM8.50 per piece. We ordered 4 to share. It takes quite a while to prepare and the shuttlebugs immediately get to work and started snapping this place left, right, center as usual ;).

The pocket pizza is looks like a big long bun with crispy pastry… baked with wood fire, the outer are slighty browned while inside are feel with cheese that guzzles out as you cut it. Its really yummy and the taste are good. We didn’t try much here, as we want to save our stomach for the other yummies awaiting us but there are various kinds of pizzas and other goodies available here.

After partially filling up our stomach, we are still early for the wantan mee at Bukit Cina and so we decided to head on to check out the riverside which Sky told us that it have been lighted really nice. Some mis-communication happened, we are supposed to meet behind Siang Chiang coffeeshop but we ended up at Jalan Kee Ann in front of Madam King. As Miharu is trying to call Sky to verify the meeting point, I spotted a popiah stall and since stomach is shouting pizza is not enough, we bought some popiah to try. Its a bit costly, RM1.80 per popiah but the filling is a lot and the highlight are pork lards which makes the popiah taste heavenly yet sinful but heck, its good ;).

We finally met up with Sky at the riverside, parking just behind Siang Chiang and it seems that every vacant lot in Melaka, there are someone to there to collect parking fees! We paid RM1 for parking, there aren’t much of a crowd here but its beautiful!

The whole place are brightly lighted blue and we are just opposite the river of the ferris wheel and pirate ships, really a good spot for an evening stroll or for shutterbugs like us to snap away :). We spent a while here until almost 8pm before heading to Bukit Cina for wantan mee.
