It has been almost a year since our last eel fishing outing in the rice bowl of Selangor in Sekinchan. It is said that Sekinchan produced one the best quality rice in the country. With its paddy fields covering the entire landscape, also means that there’s opportunity for other nature’s lifeform to grow and one of them are eels. When the paddy field is being harvested, the water level are lowered and this is the best time to fish for eels as they will be trapped in their nest, hungry waiting for the water level to increase again.

I tweet about the trip few weeks ago and next thing you know, we got a convoy of 6 cars heading to Sekinchan for eel fishing. Everyone was pretty excited about the trip, especially after I told them they have to make their own fishing rod. We got all sort of innovation, from the normal fishing rod, my dad use bamboo sticks then we have the creative guys who uses pvc pipes and even a broom stick (I shall not mention names :P )!

Anyhow, we departed a little later than we wanted that early morning and made a stop at Restoran Poek Poek 88 (GPS: N3 25.471 E101 10.560) in Tanjung Karang for a quick breakfast. This is a corner shop next to Maybank and the Tanjung Karang bridge. This is a family run coffeeshop, so with a big group like us, they are struggling to take order and serve ;) . I like their nasi lemak here, the coconut milk fragrant is nice and so is the sambal. Their noodles are not bad too, especially the chicken feet noodles.

After breakfast, we headed out to the paddy fields and it took a while for everyone to get ready to get into action. Lucky my dad was around to help them tie the strings and hook on the bait. Soon, all of us got into action and everyone is scattered around looking for eels, by then its already 10am.

Soon, we started calling out each other and looks like everyone either can find an eel’s hole or no eel is at home even if we found one. Except for Jack and Ciku whom found hole with eel but they end up feeding the eel and not catching it as they just can’t seems to get the eel on hook :( .

After getting burnt and tired of more than 2 hours of trying, we decided to call it a day and guess what, my dad who started almost half an hour later than everyone, got 5 eels himself alone! Haha… 1 guy agaisnt us 20 and we caught nothing! Worst is when I got back, everyone keep asking how many eels I caught! hahaha… super pai seh! Anyhow, no worries, just no luck and lack of time but I shall be back!

Everyone was dissapointed but got pretty excited when my dad brought his eels back, that’s when all the cameras came out again, before this everyone is just taking scenery pix, haha…

After packing up, we head to Bagan Sekinchan for lunch and my cousin Jerry brought us to this shop Jiann Chyi Restaurant (if you heading from Kuala S’gor, turn left after Caltex in Sekinchan town, then all the way to T-junction turn right and its on your left). Behind the restaurant are basically the fishing jetty, so be assured that the seafood here are fresh. What we came for is their famous spicy shark porridge! Its basically small shark cook in porridge teochew style with fishball. There’s a lot of soup like the normal teochew porridge and the porridge is still a bit hard like rice. The shark meat is surprisingly soft and tender (that is why they use small sharks) and these are fresh catch from the sea.

The next dish is their tiger shark braised with pig’s intestines and pork. Its just like the usual braised pork but you got very soft shark meat (after braising) with it, this is good for rice. We also got some vege, fried small prawns (peeled) and fried mantis prawns (a bit small in size) which is quite usual.

The other thing I like here is their fried sotong (squid), its just the ordinary deep fried in flour but the squid is so fresh that when you bite into it, its soft and a sweet seafood taste in them! I would say the 2 best thing about this shop is their spicy shark porridge and their fried squid!

For 2 tables of 19 persons (Jack & family paid separately for their table), its cost us a total of RM 247.00, which is very reasonable and definately a must come back for many of us!

Anyhow, although it was an eel-less trip for many of us I think we all enjoyed ourselves and would definately be back the hunt eels again plus yummy food. But its not that bad, many of us got home with mangoes and sweet corns (RM1 each) along the roadside ;) . But at the end, I guess, no one can be as disappointed as Jack, second time eel fishing and still no eels :P

This BKT is clean and comfortable and most important of all, it is very good! Seems that its the number of BKT restaurant offering dry bak kuth teh is on the raise. Located in Sunwaymas Commercial Center (near Aman Suria) in Petaling Jaya, its located on PJU 1/3C.

Per pax for the dry portion is RM9.50 and the soup based is RM8.50 per pax. I got both to try and the bill adds up to RM24.10 with an additional of 1 yau char kawi, 3 rice and 2 chinese tea. Price wise is quite standard for BKT nowadays but what is good is their portion are generous that I like (last week in Klang, the portion is almost half less than here!).

The soup BKT here is good, not too heavy in herbs and very tasty. The meat are tender and soft (I asked for the small bone part). The dry one is a bit unique, its the usual dry BKT fare, cooking it in black sauce with lady fingers, dried cuttlefish, dried chili but this one is a bit sweet and a hint of sour taste, very nice!

A recommended go for me ;) .

On the main road (Jalan Sg Jati) in Taman Sentosa Klang, there’s a corner shop with red signboard that is famous for its bak kut teh, they also have the dry version here. Its the cornershop on Lorong Bendehara 20B.

They serve the normal soup based bak kut teh as well as the dry bak kut teh (fried with dried chilies, dried cuttlefish and lady fingers in dark soya sauce). I ordered 1 portion of the dry one and 1 portion of the soup with a bowl of yau char kueh.

The soup one is quite good, the soup is thick but not too salty and tasty. They are also very generous with the soup where they will bring a big mug and fill until you tell them to stop.

I find the dry portion to be very small and not enough dried cuttlefish, so taste wise is a bit on the light side. I still prefer the dry bkt at soon seng behind Klang Parade instead ;) .

I bumped into Ah Fai, my friend from Kelantan (he came all the way with his gf’s family in Kuchai Lama to eat here) at Yip Weng to my surpise and since I have not been able to meet up with him much, I belanja him as well. The total from my table of 2 and his table of 5 adds up to RM111.00.
