One of the event of the Chinese New Year is to monitor the Tai Sui conflict for the year… every year, people borned under the different animal signs will conflict with the tai sui as the malific annual stars change position annually. I visited a temple in Melaka and got a chart which shows the conflict for the year of the Ox as per below:

Those animal sign listed and age (you have to be that particular year) will have conflict, it also says avoid Water and Hill… there goes my resolution to get back into mountain biking this year . Those at the bottom are indirect conflict.

I remember in the good old days, we have to go to the temple armed with information of our “si san pat chi” (Chinese time and date of birth) and address (the temple people actually translate Malay address in Chinese writing to sound exactly like it) known as “Sip Tai Sui” process. Once you have done that before the following year, you have to go back to the same temple to “Wan Tai Sui” which is like going back to give thanks on clearing the conflict.

Nowadays, temple are getting advance, they offer packages, if you want to do just “Sip Tai Sui” its RM35.00 but just add RM5.00 more and next year, the temple people will on schedule help you to “Wan Tai Sui” saving you time and money! Better still, I found some online sites that offer online Tai Sui prayer starting at USD38.00 for 1 family member.

There are a lot of temple that you can visit to perform the prayer and various temple charge differently but luckily there are still some that you pay on a free will basis as a token. I have heard like RM20 for the whole family.

Whether to believe this conflict or not, its still a Chinese culture/belief and an important event for many of us . So remember to check your signs and see if you are in conflict this year. Wishing everyone a good year ahead!
