I was in Phuket for a holiday last month and one of the interesting place I discover is a Koay Chap shop in Talat Yai in the older part of Phuket Town. This shop is situated just opposite the wet market which sells a huge varieties of interesting stuff like their local food and desserts, fresh food, we bought cooking ingredents like chili powder, tomyam paste and etc.

One of the interesting stall I discovered here, which we have to queue for number by taking a waiting card (made from used calendar) and wait for our turn. Lucky I know my 1-10 well in Thai and managed to point and order the number of pieces I want. Basically its sticky rice (glutonous) with your choice of topping, which are I think are sweet shredded coconut, spicy shredded dried prawns or pumpkin paste of your choice. Quite interesting and they folks there are nice enough to let us the ‘farang’ cut queues ;) .

thai desserts

With my limited broken Thai and some English she understands, I managed to from the lady at the stall for the 13 of us correctly, phew… the first thing that caught our attention is the braised pork being display at the noodle stall.  When we ask what’s that, they said “koay chap” which is a familar fare especially for those from Johor. Koay chap is basically braised pork and internals serve with koay teow like noodles in soup.

Thai Braised Pork

The koay chap is served with half a boiled egg, mixture of pork and parts then filled with koay teow and chinese coriander the soup from the braised pork. It is absolutely good and not too oily. Plus, we eat it thai style but adding some chili powder in, superbly delicious! The soup is not too heavy or light and pork are of course tender and light, very good cooking.

thai dry noodles

The dry version of the noodles comes with noodles, taugeh, mixture of pork and parts, some vege and peanuts. As usual for thai noodles, you have the choice of adding chili powder, vinegar, fish sauce and sugar to your taste.

The shop is setup mainly for the locals but it was good to be eating what the local eat and most important of all, it was really good!

After work I endured the madness of traffic all the way from Hartamas to Puchong just to find the “batang gang” as Sky described it (I tihnk we really need a better name for this group!) for some beer and good german style pork knuckle. We went to Stadt, this new German bistro we heard of in Bandar Puteri that serve beer with pork knuckle aand sausages (all the key words hit, sure la we come!)

P1090946

There are 2 choices for the german pork knuckle here, one is the original, RM42++ per knuckle comes with sauerkraut and whipped potato. The other is the honey glazed pork knuckled RM44++, this one the skin is glazed with honey when cooking and comes with some bacons and whipped potato!

german pork sausages

Since there are so many of us, we ordered both to tried. I prefer the honey glazed one as the skin is more crispy than crunchy and the glazed add a nice taste on top even without adding mustard to the pork. We sort of cleaned up both in no time with only the cleaned up bones (thanks to Jack) left!

The other thing we tried is their german sausages, there’s a combo plate with a few type for RM49++ and that is very good too when taken with English mustard. We got a pasta and some snacks as well, but I think more than RM20 for pasta is not worth it and RM7 for fries is a bit too much… the calamari is very good and fresh but RM14 :(

Pasta

We went to Carlsberg instead as there’s a promotion of RM30++ (10% service charge) per jug and drank while filling up our belly away… technically conclusion is, stick with the pork and you won’t go wrong here ;) .

At night time, the entire “chow yang SS2″ area turned into a popular makan place for PJ folks as most family opt to eat out on the weekend for rice and dishes kind of place. One of the mainly choices here is the Seeri Authentic Thai Restaurant.

The dishes are quite authentic except that they do not serve pork here. There are quite a range of choices for ala carte and they also provide set meals for RM6 up each.

Seafood Tomyam

I ordered a small seafood tomyam (RM15), squid fried with chilies (RM12) and a chicken fried with basil (RM12) for my dinner. The tomyam portion is good, serve in a charcoal heated pot with a generous amount of seafood (squid, prawns and fish) in it. It is a quite sour but not very spicy, which may be a good thing for folks like me after having too much spicy food on my last trip to Phuket recently.

Fried squid with chili

The squid fried with chilies is nice, again taste is good, not too spicy but the squid are really good, soft and tender. The basil fried chicken is ok and goes well with my rice. For those who love spicy food, I think you will need to tell them to make it thai spicy standard for you ;) .
