Salut near Kota Kinabalu in Sabah have some roadside stalls that’s famous for a few things. The main highlight here is the grill coconut which the whole coconut are being grilled in oil drum that’s being converted into an oven. Once the you have ordered, they will take the steaming hot coconut out and chop it up to be served hot.
To me, its like drinking coconut soup, that’ how it taste. If you like, you can always add some honey to it.
The other thing that’s good here is their coconut pudding which was what Yau Leng recommended me to come for. In iced containers you find whole coconut dipped in ice water. Take those on top away from the water so it doesn’t get soaked said Heng Kiat’s mum whom was joining us on this trip. When opened, inside the coconut is filled with coconut pudding which are pudding made with coconut juice and evaporated milk then chilled to be served.
These stalls also serve and sell seafood that are caught nearby and on my visit there are some lokan (big clams) and mud crabs for sale. For a plate of lokan plus labour and sauces to grill cost RM12 and we had some just for fun. Crabs goes from RM20-27 for a whole lot of them. The bunch I picked up is about 3kg for RM27, that’s very cheap comparing to KL prices!
Overall I think the best thing I will miss here is the coconut pudding while the rest is just a good experience to try

Wah lau eh!!!! I want! I want! Especially the giant clams and the crab! What is that yellow stuff on the clams?

hahaha… the yellow stuff are mashed garlic and onion paste use to grill the lokan
