Sg Lembing Trip: Batang Trip 2, Part 1

We start off the trip watching a quick set of the thomas cup game in between our national hero, Dato Lee vs. Lin Dan at the cafe near office. Although a running a little late, we departed after a dissapointing set at about 8pm.

We made our way after dinner to Sg Lembing, going through Jalan Duta, on the new DUKE highway, then going to Karak highway on a 3 car convoy. Johnny’s Wish, Soony’s SX4 and Vijily’s Altis (putting a y at the end of everyone’s name seems kind of fun :P).

As we are approaching the Gambang rest stop we got an SOS form Vijily’s car… seems that Joey have not had dinner, so we did a stop in Gambang as per my con-job-marketing itinerary for supper at 10.40pm.

After some nasi lemak and teh tarik, we head to Kuantan toll exit and fill up the vehicles at the nearby Shell before heading to our destination, Sg Lembing.  The road to Sg Lembing after the highway was ok but as these are small trunk roads, then to be dark, windy and have cows lying in the middle of the road (actually the cows only appeared after Johnny told me to speed up, no cows one).

We finally got to Sg Lembing at midnight and Johnny had to woke up the uncle we are renting the resthouse from to come to town to show us the place. Minutes later an uncle on motorbike came to lead us, first thing we had to do is cross a wooden bridge with our cars, no big deal but in the middle of the time can look scary for first timer, hehe.

The route to the resthouse which lies in the villages take us passed the river, a big cementery, some more villages before we finally got to the resthouse at 12.20am. The resthouse (GPS: N3 54.397 E103 01.792) is one of the village houses that was renovated 9 months ago, its a one and a half storey half bricks, half wooden house by the river. The place is clean with 6 rooms, each room with aircond and a double bed. Boiled drinking water is also supplied with thermos and a fridge. There’s also a bbq pit outside with basin for washing plus a 32 inch LCD TV (looks just like model I have at home) with Astro in the living room. It costed us RM700 for 2 nights, not too bad la except the living room no aircond or fan :(.

The first thing the geeks had to do was to filled up fridge with beer and we thanked KCly and Lohy for helping ;). We had to wake up at 6am the next day as our 4WD transport was coming to get us at 6.30am to start off our adventure in Sg Lembing… however it was way passed midnight that I still can’t sleep… well, I almost until someone started talking loudly in the living hall… haha…

The next morning was just plain tiring… the chipmunks started blarring at 6am to get us up. some are still stone, some are already quicking grabbing bread or cupnoodles. The highlight that morning is really KCly’s crocs which looks like something Michael Jackson would love to wear :P.

Soon at 6.30am our transport arrived and its an old Toyota Hilux which is converted for off roading and transporting lots of people arrived at our door and ironically, the operator stays in one of the house about 100 metres away from where we are staying.

The back cargo space of the Hilux have 2 benches installed to maximise passengers it can carry. The only one problem we had is that there’s 12 of us plus the driver is 13 but the 4WD can only fit 12!  After some discussion, trial and error, we finally decided to squeeze the smaller 4 to the back seat of the Hilux and that way we can fit all 13 into the 4WD! So our sardined journey starts here and that lasted for the next 1 hour and 15 mins ;).

With Jacky rubbing my ass and Leoly rubbing my shoulders, we sardined our way into the forest of Sg Lembing, going up muddy hills, crossing rivers, avoiding tree branches that slapped, licked and kissed us in our face.

The best part was we had to stopped halfway as there was another convoy of 4WD that was carrying another group stopped in front of us. They were appreciating and photographying some wild ginger flowers by the roadside. It was a Land Rover Defender and as some of the passenger was getting up the back of the comfortabley seated back I can hear one guy saying “you see those guys at the back, now you know how lucky we are” (obviously they thought cramping on  comfortable seats was bad until they saw us) LOL.

We soon arrived at the trail to trek up to Rainbow falls and the trail (GPS: N3 55.300 E102 57.389) starts off with a knee deep river crossing, the guide told us that we are lucky as the previous day it was chest high water. The river looked mild but as you put your foot in, it suddenly is not as easy as you think as the current below is actually quite strong.

The trail up is a mixture of stoney river sides, muddy trail and the last part we have to climb one big stone to the other as we make our way up to Rainbow falls. As we are approaching and the sighting of the falls, we can’t help but to take the short break to snap as much picture as possible as we can. As we reach the top, we were greeted by a cooling midst of the falls that just blows into you, a big green pool and a majestic view of the falls that’s almost 10 stories high.  The feeling was great and the view is just rewarding, if I have to find a word to describe it, I would say heavenly ;). After a group photo, some of us moved to find a good spot to wait for the rainbow to appear on the falls while Leoy and KCly decided to jump into the water and made a lot of noise of course. So of the other geeks decided not to go into the water but we love having them around as they became the perfect friend to take care of our bags :P.

It was a packed day and we have many other groups joining us at the falls but nevertheless, it was great to be there. The water is clean, clear, sweet and not to mention, cold! The bottom of the falls is the perfect massaging spot as the water come gushing down on your back, actually it feels like playing in the rain again, just that this is a really heavy rain!

We bought some canned food and bread up (with one damage along the way as Vijily dropped them into a pool of water) to regain some energy for our climb down.

Leoly started eating like a kid (maybe he thought it was the fountain of youth he found, hehe) and started dripping the tuna sauce all over my crocs… *slap slap*. Earlier in the morning, the guide offered to bring cupnoodles for us not knowing we had enough at the house already. Later we found there’s a RM10 per head charge if we had taken the offer for the cupnoodles on top of the RM32 we are already paying per head for transport and guide.

After a hearty snack, we take another 45 mins to hike down the falls and get back to the vehicle for the journey out. We did a brief stop to see the local hot spring, really nothing impressive and we move on after 5 minutes of visiting. The 4WD then took us to town for food, we ended up a coffeeshop in town which also belongs to the owner of the 4WD!

The owner is very friendly but also good at doing business ;). Besides the usual local drinks of coffee, tea, milo, etc. we had some pau, noodles and kueh.

The char siew pau here goes for RM1.10 each and the only thing different is they actually included eggs in the filling. The noodles is pretty simple, locally made noodles fried dry with some tomato like taste. The noodles is only 80 cents per pack, no toppings but its surprisingly, simple and really nice ;). We were attracted to the unique way they make raddish cake by frying the outer layer but I must say its really too hard!

I took a short stroll outside the shop after food and I must say on a Saturday afternoon, the town is really sleepy! You can always stand in the middle of the road and not get hit by a vehicle. Just as we were about to go back, the 4WD wouldn’t start and we had to give it a push to get it started.

Most of us were drained back at the resthouse, some took time to explore the village, there’s a noodles maker and a suspension bridge over the river nearby, some cleaned up, soony decided to fall down and add a few bruises to himself (jealous after seeing me getting a whole lot of them on my leg when I fell on the way down the waterfall trail from slippery rocks).
