The DongZhi are said to be the most important event in the Chinese calendar as my mum always said DongZhi is more important than Chinese New Year. My sis asked me what do we called DongZhi in Chinese and that is a pretty good question, all I could think of is… Winter Celebration? So, I google-d a little and found out that its known the marking of winter solstice.

From Wikipedia: In China, Dongzhi was originally celebrated as an end-of-harvest festival. Today, it is observed with a family reunion over the long night, when pink and white tangyuan are eaten in sweet broth to symbolise family unity and prosperity.

Anyhow, we gathered for Dongzhi last weekend and my parents prepared a 9 dishes course for us to feast on plus my favourite tangyuan as well.

…and a lotus root and peanut soup to compliment the above. For many family nowadays, they longer go to make their own tangyuan and buy from supermarket (those with fillings). But I had to say… my favourite is still good old traditional tangyuan with sweet ginger soup ;) .

We were having a bbq and I head over to Piau Kee to grab some seafood. We went to the Puchong branch, they are also located in SS2 and Cheras.

They offer a varieties of live mud crabs… I am not sure about the crab sizing but I got the XL (looks like M to me) as they have ran out of XXL… it cost RM33.00 per kg, I applied for their membership card I got 10% discount on the spot, pretty neat ;) . I took 8 of them which comes up to 3.17kg, total RM 94.09, I will say that is not bad for it size. We had to let it breathe and brought it up the office to keep it alive till bbq time, thanks to KC for taking care of them… hehehe…

The other seafood stuff here are all hard frozen but surprisingly they are still very good and fresh when it was unfrozen to cook. We got some white prawns here, they have various sizes. The bigger one have about 16-20 pcs at RM38.00 (on promo) and 40-50 pcs per pack at RM24.00.

They also have some nice mussels and scallops from New Zealand which goes for RM19.80 per pack for scallops and RM9.90 for mussels. The mussels is ok but the scallop is a bit small in size. They also sell various kind of sauces and other ingredients you need to cook seafood here.

I would say this is a decent, clean and easy way for city folks to do seafood shopping. Now that I got a membership card, guess I will be back for more :)

Time sure flies, it was just December last year I participated in the first Penang Food Hunt 2007 and the 2008 Penang Food Hunt now officially on. For those intereted, please visit Rasarasa.net and register today ;) .

Penang Food Hunt 2008

Its only RM150 per pax inclusive of really generous goodies bag plus accommodation in Penang itself. From my previous experience participating, it is really worth it, its a HIGH RECOMMENDED hunt, so much fun and good food. The prizes are really attractive too.

From what I experienced, you either be the competitor and think about winning, then you will need a strategy, for example sacrifice some points for time consuming task and maximize your time on points gaining task in a short period of time. But for me, its more about enjoying the hunt and the food, taking our own sweet time and all ;) .

Unfortunately, this year I could not participate due to prior engagement but I should be in Penang the same time too, hope to bump into some of the food hunters then :) .
