The Thai people are always regarded as very creative people to me.. they amazed me with their ability to design and create new and interesting things… not only from all the nice home decor stuff but also in terms of the various kinds of food and beverages.

One of the thing I discovered is their sliced bread… these bread sells for Baht 6 each, that’s like RM0.60 each.. they come in various flavour e.g. pandan kaya, coffee, etc.

Thai sliced coffee bread

The brand that I tried is Le Pan and I just picked this bread up at 7-11. Its really a very convenient way of a bread to go. Imagine you are rushing for work but dying for say kaya with bread. Instead of making your own.. just go to 7-11, pick these sliced bread (complete with kaya) and go.

The packaging is very good.. once you open it up, there’s another layer of plastic inside so the spread doesn’t stick to the plastic all over the bread. So just remove that and as if you have a bread spread with toppings of your choice.

The coffee flavour is like butter with coffee in it. Other than that, its really just normal bread but very cool idea, absolutely love it ;) .

Near Phuket town area at the new shopping district where Festive Central, all the hypermarts and home improvements establishment are located, I was introduced to this roast duck place. SOHO serve good roast duck and you have the option to take it with rice or noodles.

Besides duck, you can also opt for roast pork as well. The rice option is serve on a normal portion, we opted for roast pork mix with roast duck on the rice with some vege and gravy on it. I won’t fancy the sauce, mainly its sweet but the roast duck and roast pork is good ;)

The noodles version is rather small, just like all thai noodles portion. The noodles are yellowish egg noodles with a wanton added with vege in soup with the roast duck topping. The soup and all is ok but I don’t fancy the egg noodles taste and portion is too small for me, have eat 2 bowl, then again reason to eat both noodles and rice, hehe. However, with a little twist of adding the usual noodles topping like chili powder and some vinegar, the soup is really good!

Price here start at 40-50 baht per order depending what you want on it and good thing is that the owner understand some basic English and there is an English menu available ;) . Parking is also easy here, so not a bad place to have some good roast duck here in Phuket.

I was in Phuket for a holiday last month and one of the interesting place I discover is a Koay Chap shop in Talat Yai in the older part of Phuket Town. This shop is situated just opposite the wet market which sells a huge varieties of interesting stuff like their local food and desserts, fresh food, we bought cooking ingredents like chili powder, tomyam paste and etc.

One of the interesting stall I discovered here, which we have to queue for number by taking a waiting card (made from used calendar) and wait for our turn. Lucky I know my 1-10 well in Thai and managed to point and order the number of pieces I want. Basically its sticky rice (glutonous) with your choice of topping, which are I think are sweet shredded coconut, spicy shredded dried prawns or pumpkin paste of your choice. Quite interesting and they folks there are nice enough to let us the ‘farang’ cut queues ;) .

With my limited broken Thai and some English she understands, I managed to from the lady at the stall for the 13 of us correctly, phew… the first thing that caught our attention is the braised pork being display at the noodle stall.  When we ask what’s that, they said “koay chap” which is a familar fare especially for those from Johor. Koay chap is basically braised pork and internals serve with koay teow like noodles in soup.

Thai Braised Pork

The koay chap is served with half a boiled egg, mixture of pork and parts then filled with koay teow and chinese coriander the soup from the braised pork. It is absolutely good and not too oily. Plus, we eat it thai style but adding some chili powder in, superbly delicious! The soup is not too heavy or light and pork are of course tender and light, very good cooking.

thai dry noodles

The dry version of the noodles comes with noodles, taugeh, mixture of pork and parts, some vege and peanuts. As usual for thai noodles, you have the choice of adding chili powder, vinegar, fish sauce and sugar to your taste.

The shop is setup mainly for the locals but it was good to be eating what the local eat and most important of all, it was really good!
