Its been 2 years since my last visit here, although its for work, I still need to eat right? So, I got into a mood to retrace back all the food I like to eat in Hong Kong.

The first thing I had is a superbly yummy bowl of beef tripes noodles, which I had in a small shop with no signboard at Thomson Street in Wanchai. How small is the shop, imagine its a half shop (Hong Kong standard is half Malaysia) and half of it is kitchen and the other half is dining area. The shop fit a max of no more than 8 person, I was the 7th when I got it.

Sharing table is a norm there, most of the time, you need not as, just sit down if there is no one there and they understand, because that’s how their system works. So I ordered my noodles, unfortunately they ran out of “hor fun” (koay teow) so I went with meehoon instead. The meehoon here are the vietnamese type, which are thick.

The broth of the is just amazingly nice… sweet from the flavours of the beef and a nice mix of aroma from herbs in it. The beef are tender, nice and quite a generous portion. It cost HK$22.00 a bowl and this is consider cheap over here as bigger shops may charge more. Add another 7 bucks and I got a nice cup of ice milk tea, which is a must if you are in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, as I was rushing for my meeting and I had only 10 mins to enjoy it.

For dinner, I decided that I want my roast goose (siew ngor)! Roast goose are roast duck like, must the meat are softer and more tender (fats too). I had mine with bbq pork (char siew) as well and it comes with some vegetables and rice. That cost me about HK$35-40.00 I think, can’t remember, excluding drinks!

One of the bread I like in Hong Kong is known as Life Bread, Honey & Egg flavour. Its plain lightly flavour bread and I like to take them plain. A loaf will cost HK$10.00 and you can get this in any supermarket and I find it just lovely to take with a cup of hot coffee or tea :).

Next on my list is a very simple dish, fried luncheon meat with eggs on rice! Its kind of a chinese fast food, you can have this in like most “char chan teng” (coffeeshop). As I was tired and sick after my meeting, I decided to pack and eat in at the hotel. I got mine from Ka Ka Lok in TST in Kowloon, just a short walk from my Hotel.

Its HK$29.00 and comes with free soup! You can either take this dish with just soya sauce on top, or they have sauce like curry, black pepper and tomato to top it. I took mine with black pepper this time and it’s just nice and simple. But the only thing is, there is really not a single tiny bit of vegetables on it, it really means only rice, luncheon meat and eggs!

I went for a set breakfast, its always a value to go for it. For HK$22.00, I got a macaronni with ham, 2 fried eggs and piece of buttered bread plus a hot drink, this can filled you up past lunch time!

Egg tarts, costing HK$4.00 one is also on my list and I took it with a nice cup of tea! Egg tarts are soft and melts off in your mouth but the pastry can be a little heavy in butter though.

Unfortunately, this trip, I was down with flu midway and wasn’t really in a mood to travel to eat or hunt for my favourite food… things like claypot rice, curry fishball, wanton noodles, steam rice, teng chai porridge,  pork chop rice, all sort of desserts, etc. So, technically, these are my breakfast, lunch and dinner that I had in between work :(.

Just before leaving Hong Kong, I thought I try something new and while I had sometime at the IFC where I am taking the train to the airport, I try out the Soup Cafe. They had all sort of set meals here but not very local but I saw a Drunken Wings & Duck Glizzards for HK$25.00.

I gave that a try, its basically chicken wings and duck glizzards, served as a cold dish with a heavy cooking wine tasting sauce at the bottom. To my surprise, its quite nice and I like it ;). But it doesn’t comes with rice or anything, so I found another interesting thing to try at the airport. Oh, while waiting for the train to the airport, I saw this handphone charging station, quite cool, support most phones. The charger fits my phone, but don’t work la… written there O2 and HTC :(

QQ rice, is supposed to be some kind of healthy rice which you can either choose your fillings and rice type or go for the standard recommendations. You can choose from brown rice, purple rice, red rice, etc. with a load of fillings. Check out their menu here.

I took the double pork purple & red rice which is supposed to only have 270 calories at HK$21.00 without drinks or HK$26.00 with a bottle of healthy soya milk. The filling is tasty but the rice is tasteless, so you gotta eat them together la. Its something interesting to try but heck, I won’t eat it again, haha… healthy food don’t taste as nice I guess :P.

Anyway I am glad to be home where I am able to drive to work and not get sardined in MTR and people rushing everywhere and having my nice bowl of prawns noodles for lunch.

Mentioned pork satay and the first thing comes to my mind are those yummy one you find in Melaka with the nice yummy pineapple peanut sauce. So are there any pork satay in the Klang Valley?

One of the oldest place around that sells pork satay in Klang Valley is Ong Satay located at stall no.6 in the SS2 Hawker’s Center or better known as Wai Sek Kai. They only open at night and their specialty are satay and chicken wings.

Satay choices includes pork, chicken, beef and mutton each at RM0.60 per piece. Chicken wings goes for RM1.90 per piece. If you are lucky, you can also order their pork intestines satay. The intestines satay is only available when someone place a bulk order with them and request for it, otherwise the owner will not offer it normally. If you are interested in ordering you need to call them 2 days in advance to prepare especially if you want the pork intestine satay to be included by calling +6012-2978560.

Their satay are lean, not too fat and the sauce offered to me are quite heavy in taste, very different from the Melaka one but still quite good to me ;). But of course I know my Melaka friends will argue with me that Melaka one is much better as usual when it comes to satay, satay celup and anything that Melaka is famous for :P.

Yeah BBQ time again! This is a very simple recipe for BBQ…

BBQ Chicken Wings
I prefer to buy my chicken wings at the wet market, although it cost more but you get bigger size chicken wings (almost double the size of those you get at hypermarts).

Wash the wings and dry them, then get the marinate ready. Basically pound lemongrass and ginger (garlic can be added too) then spread them evenly all over the wings. Add a mixture of oyster sauce, light soya sauce, pepper and chinese cooking wine to the chicken. Top it off with sliced kaffir lime leaves and lime juice (lots of them).

BBQ Pork Ribs
Only pork ribs can do the job! Nothing else. Got a bit ambitious and try to bbq the whole rack, but I find that its easier to bbq them in chopped size. The marinate for ribs is not too much different from the wings, pound ginger and shallots, spread them over the ribs. Add in a mixture of light soya sauce, pepper, honey and chinese cooking wine (some oyster sauce is ok is fancy) on to the ribs. I dropped in a few sliced bay leaves as well.

Bag the wings and ribs in the fridge for at least 4 hours or best overnight. Then bbq or grill them to your liking complimented with streaky bacon & streaky ham and you will have a power bbq, yummy!

Went on a one night short working trip to Labuan with my buddy Raz-da-man. Decided to make the best out of this trip (stressful meeting mah) and try the local speciality, chicken wings and seafood (According to Alex, our office Labuan expert :P).

However, knowing Man, before we can venture out, we stocked up the apartment with lots of duty free beers! RM1.70 for local beers and RM2.50 for imported! Wines start from RM10!

Its my first time here and its amazingly such a small town and there’s hardly any cars on the road after 7pm! We couldn’t get a cab on the street and we end up walking to the shoplots behind Mariner Hotel.

We stumbled into our first makan objective, Chicken Wings :). Per order is 6 pcs @ RM6, that’s very reasonable. The wings are serve burning hot, with a squeeze of lime and a dark dip (spicy, sweet and sour).

Next, we went to New Sung Hwa Seafood which is next to the market. Its upstairs at the PCK building which have a pub downstairs (fyi, 1 jug of beer at the pub is RM13 only). Its a small little corner upstairs, probably 10 tables or so, price is quite cheap, RM80/kg of lobster, prawns start from RM60/kg. You can basically get fishes, crabs, lobsters, prawns, giant calms and all sort of shell fishes here.

Since there are only 2 of us, I ordered fish to be fried with ginger and soya sauce, 4 giant prawns (RM90/kg), 1 fried squid and 1 vege. The fish is so-so, with more people I would have ordered a seabass to be steamed, squid is cut and deep fried, the dip is sweet and sour. The best are the prawns which is fried with minced garlic, simply fantastic. Everything with rice and drinks is RM58.00.

Cab are hard to find unless you call for one and its RM10 everywhere within town. So when we are done with dinner, we decided to just stand downstairs and enjoy the breeze from the ocean. Then one of the restaurant guy came down and asked if we have transport. I say no, waiting for taxi and he laughed! Hehe… but he was nice enough to give us a lift back to the hotel, small town people are friendly. He told me its his sister’s restaurant and they are planning to extend 1 unit next door. Also, its always full on Saturday. I asked him about chicken wings in Labuan and he said the best are out of town in the kampung. The funny thing is when I told him I come from KL, he told he will be here through AirAsia’s free ticket and he really want to eat Ipoh Chicken Rice here, but that to us is like… what? Hehehe… so I guess we are mad about their seafood and there, they fancy our everyday food here. Funny but think about it.

Overall, its not a bad trip after all, and I think its a good place to return for a good quiet holiday, probably go snorkelling by day and seafood hunting at night. I shall be back ;)
