Con’t from part 7…

It was about 6pm when we finally left JB with Elaine & Patrick leading us to Tebrau to hit the NSE for our journey back to Melaka. Elaine & Patrick head back to JB to continue their hometown visit while the Chung family went straight back to KL. The remaining 7 of us went back to Melaka to spend a night since we don’t have to work the next day and it was a good choice too as the traffic was quite heavy approaching Melaka.

We got back to Melaka and immediate head to Miharu & Sky’s house for a quick shower and rest before heading to Jalan Ong Kim Wee for satay celup as supper. Ah Fei strongly recommended Ban Lee Siang and we obliged. This is Sor J first time trying satay celup… sad KL boy :P.

It was very pack but at least no queue like Capitol… so we got a table at the back and wasting no time, some of us are already picking our celup food. Its the usual satay celup fare, I would not elaborate about it, I am sure enough blogs have information on it but my favourite are the “tau kei” or known as “foo chuk” in KL and also the kangkung veggie. Overall comments are the food at Capitol is fresher but I prefer here, less crowded, at least I don’t have some guy waiting for table standing next to me while I eat! Per stick starts at 50 cents each and we ate more than 100 sticks costing RM69 in total plus drinks.

Sky, Miharu and the very “kek tung” Ah Fei then had a long arguement on where to go for a drink after our supper and we ended up in Kota Laksamana. Unfortunately the place is so packed that we can’t find a table to sit. Since we are there for drinks only, we just went to 1 of the chinese restaurant for tea and softdrinks.

That night, I think I slept the best the whole trip and we decided to get a little later the next day for breakfast. Before breakfast, we dropped by Sky’s house for a short “Raya” visit as he has all these tit bits to serve us. Right before leaving, Sor J keep asking to go and see Sky new house, so we made a short detour as well. Renovation have yet to start but its really big house with nice plot of land too! Jealous-nya… cheaper than my house somemore bigger!

We went to Jalan Tun Sri Lanang, at the makeshift food court where it sells Hee Kiaw Mee, Chicken Rice Balls and Wantan Mee. We are out of luck that morning, the chicken rice balls stall is out of chicken and we could only get the rice balls. But to me, the rice balls are the highlight, not the chicken, so its ok at RM1.50 per plate of 6. We also ordered hee kiaw mee and some of us had wantan mee. Poor Sor J, again never seen orange color fish paste before and I obviously took the chance to conned him that they put orange in the fish paste… hahahaha :P

After our yummy breakfast, we then depart back home… 2 hours drive but after a good breakfast, seems damn long and sleepy. We made it back by 12 plus and I actually skipped lunch for the day, ate too much for the last few days. It was a good trip again, really fun and thanks to all the MPs who joined us; Sky, Lee Chen, Jess, Miharu, Ah Fei, Sor J, Ed, Johnson, Elaine, Pat, Chung family ;). See you again in 2009 :P.

The End.

Con’t part 2…

The next day, we all head and meet up at Siang Chiang coffeshop with Sky talked highly about for breakfast. On the way there, my truck it hits 100,000 mileage… that is just in 2 years and 10 months time, that proved I have really been traveling around Malaysia like crazy!

We got to Siang Chiang and something hits me… its Melaka, you need to pay parking even if its a weekend but not sure do I need to pay on public holiday… heck to be on the save side, I bought a book for 5 X hourly tickets at RM3.00 and used one of it.

Siang Chiang is a busy place for breakfast, lucky for us a table is just about to leave as we walked in and Sky quickly alerted us to grab it, grab it, grab it quick he said… hehehe… kan cheong betul. So, we settled ourselves, got nice Malaccan coffee to help us stay alert for the day and how can you not have toast and half boiled eggs. Then I saw the bak chang (dumplings) and couldn’t resist, so we got a normal bak chang and a Nyonya bak chang to try. I really like the nyonya bak chang, its a little sweet but very tasty and you almost can’t stop eating it.

Sky ordered a must eat for us… it the mee suah from 1 of the stall in Siang Chiang. The wait is long, so the moment we sat, he had already placed the order. Our mee suah is extra everything size, which surprised the aunties next table whom asked if we order normal, cause their mee suah seems smaller than ours, hehe. Its cost RM5.00 per plate but its worth every single cent of it.

The mee suah we ordered are dried with dark sauce topped with 5-6 mid size prawns, vegetables, char siew (bbq pork), fried dried anchovies and shredded chicken. The whole plate was just huge and prawns keep poping up as you eat your noodles away, mee suah itself is good and topping are heavenly!

I can instantly feel weight gain coming on that morning with all the good food in Melaka in just 1 night! Anyhow, after that its was time to head out and our next destination is Kluang in Johor where we will be meeting the Chung family.

Con’t from part 1…

After visiting the riverside, we head on for wantan mee and got here slightly after 8pm, parking was a bit tough here. The wantan mee stall is located in a food court along Jalan Temenggong. When we got there, tables are filled up and not of them are eating… then I was told the wantan mee stall are still preparing for business and won’t be ready until 8.45pm and those people are all there waiting for it to start serving!

Since our stomach are making a lot of noise, we decided not to wait and head on for crabs. So we got back to our wheels and moved on to Lu Yeh Yen for crabs at Jalan Bunga Raya. As we are heading to Lu Yeh Yen from my truck, we decided to buy some yau char kwai at the famous stall outside Restoran Mei Sin. Its 50 cents per piece but I was told price have increased and the size have been reduced a lot. But the crowd is still there, no doubt the yau char kwai are really good and crispy.

Lu Yeh Yen is a crab place next to a temple and it’s actually extend partially into the temple’s compound for outdoor seating area. Our first impression was… ermm… can eat crabs in temple one meh? Sky explains or maybe con, I am not sure, haha… that the temple are Taoism, that’s why is ok. Anyway Lu Yeh Yen seems to be a popular and well recognised place as you can see the various awards it showcase on its wall.

We didn’t want a full course meals, since we are reserving some supper space for wantan mee. So Sky ordered 1kg plus (3 small crabs) of chili crabs and another 1kg plus of salt baked crabs. We also ordered some ‘mantao’ (steamed buns) and ‘loh mai fan’ (gluotunous rice) to supplement the crabs since Ed is trying to avoid seafood because of his healing wounds, but heck, I keep telling him, you need poison to cure poison :P. Then suddenly no matter how good the crabs are, we just pretend it sucks for Ed sake.. hehehe.

Service was a bit slow here and we had to wait really long for the food to come. Lucky we got Sor J (ex-10.60, now new nick for him) to entertain us and he keeps going back to the yau char kwai stall to hassle the owner to fried yau char kwai for him and they reject his RM5 notes because its slightly torned.

When we got to a point that we are quite unset with the wait for the food, it finally arrived. The chili crabs was good, sauce is nice, not too salty nor spicy, just right but not worth the wait. Then the salt baked crabs come, then the wait becomes worth it. The crabs retains its sweet flavour inside while the exterior are covered lightly with salt and a slight bbq aroma, its really one of the best salt baked crabs most of us have tasted (yet we told Ed its not nice to make him feel better :P). The gluotunous rice is not bad too, doesn’t stick too much and tasted really good. Total damage is RM131.00, quite expensive but at least tasted really good. The small crabs here are RM40 per kg while the big one is RM50-52 per kg, can’t remember exactly but looks like its still cheaper to eat crabs in KL.

After filling ourselves up and quite tired from our day, we decided to quickly complete our last stop, back to the wantan mee at Bukit Cina. Parking was a hassle and by now, the food court are filled with people. You can now see the wantan mee stall in full swing action, the lady boss is busy scolding the workers, the husband is just making the noodles like nothing is happening and a lot of tables are waiting for the noodles. This I was told is a norm at this place. After a while chatting and laughing the night away, our food arrived. I got the dried wantan noodles with chili, I think this makes its special, the others looks normal. My dried chili wantan mee are spicy with siew yok (roast pork) and char siew (bbq pork) on top. We also have a bowl of braised chicken feets and mushrooms to share.

The noodles have less “kan sui” (an alkaline salt mixture) taste which are normally used to improve the texture of the noodles but doesn’t taste good! Besides that, I think the only thing that makes it different are the chili sauce on to the dry wantan noodles, which give it a little hint of spicy taste which I am quite fond of :). Chicken feets are braised really soft but not enough taste to me, maybe I am spoilt by my mum’s braised chicken feets :P.

How much does the wantan mee cost? No idea, haha… I just gave Sky a RM50 note to cover and he just return some change to me… Sky want to comment on pricing?

After our yummy supper and a whole evening of good makan, we head back to Sky & Miharu’s place to bunk for the night. Unfortunately for me… I was being bugged by mosquitoes the whole night, keeping me awake, I wonder how come Sor J didn’t get much mozzies bites… I have a theory… maybe 1 mozzie went to bite Sor J and died instantly after sucking his blood.. then the rest decided to just live with high cholesterol than instant death and bite me instead? :P

Oct 6

Yippee! Its holiday time again and since there’s a long break, I had decided on the 11th hour to go ahead and do a partial Peninsula Malaysia Makan Trip. I had wanted to organise part 3 of the trip to complete the whole south but because of budget plus time constraints, I had decided to do a 2.5 version of it, this time covering Melaka and parts of Johor.

I managed to gathered a bunch of MPs to join my trip at the last minute… no no… not member of parliament but MP = makan pals la hehehe :P. But because of the last minute nature, I have part time kaki-s joining in Melaka, some meeting in Johor and some meeting even later in Johor. Ok, let’s not get into details here, I will just confused myself :P.

So on Raya’s eve, we head down to Melaka after our half day work and met up with Sky, our Melaka tour guide for some good makan. Hmm… not sure if I should mention about our little highway peanuts n incident here, hehe… better not, I might get wallop later for this :P.

We wanted to go to Ming Sate Hut to whack some pork satay and was told that it closes at 6pm. We reached there at about 5.45-5.50pm but was told that they are closing up already. Our reaction was… huh? In KL, most shop won’t refuse business and would usually serve the last customer that walked in at 6? Maybe the lifestyle here is more laid back, I mean, there are stalls I know that opens at 2pm, close at 5pm and a list of others that start their business at odd hours.

So, feeling a little disappointed, we opt for the laksa nearby  which is also closed! Then Miharu suggested the laksa 88 at Jonkers and guess what… its closed too! Gosh… all these Malaccans taking us to all the wrong places! Anyhow, since we are in Jonkers… Sky decided to take us to Coconut House to get something to eat first as our next stop are wantan noodles at Jalan Temenggong or they refer to as the Bukit Cina Wantan Mee stall.

Coconut House is converted from one of those old baba-nyonya house into a modern cafe, its on the same row as Puri Hotel and just opposite Baba House. My first impression is very good, I like the way the place is being designed, with very cosy and old days feel furniture. The first part are indoor seating area follow by an open roof courtyard with small tables and a bar.

This place serve mainly Italian and is well known for their pocket pizza. Its not cheap, RM8.50 per piece. We ordered 4 to share. It takes quite a while to prepare and the shuttlebugs immediately get to work and started snapping this place left, right, center as usual ;).

The pocket pizza is looks like a big long bun with crispy pastry… baked with wood fire, the outer are slighty browned while inside are feel with cheese that guzzles out as you cut it. Its really yummy and the taste are good. We didn’t try much here, as we want to save our stomach for the other yummies awaiting us but there are various kinds of pizzas and other goodies available here.

After partially filling up our stomach, we are still early for the wantan mee at Bukit Cina and so we decided to head on to check out the riverside which Sky told us that it have been lighted really nice. Some mis-communication happened, we are supposed to meet behind Siang Chiang coffeeshop but we ended up at Jalan Kee Ann in front of Madam King. As Miharu is trying to call Sky to verify the meeting point, I spotted a popiah stall and since stomach is shouting pizza is not enough, we bought some popiah to try. Its a bit costly, RM1.80 per popiah but the filling is a lot and the highlight are pork lards which makes the popiah taste heavenly yet sinful but heck, its good ;).

We finally met up with Sky at the riverside, parking just behind Siang Chiang and it seems that every vacant lot in Melaka, there are someone to there to collect parking fees! We paid RM1 for parking, there aren’t much of a crowd here but its beautiful!

The whole place are brightly lighted blue and we are just opposite the river of the ferris wheel and pirate ships, really a good spot for an evening stroll or for shutterbugs like us to snap away :). We spent a while here until almost 8pm before heading to Bukit Cina for wantan mee.

Everyone knows that chicken rice ball is the icon of Melaka’s food but its also considered to be a very tourist type of food now especially in places like Chung Wah & Famosa whic is famous and can be packed at times. I was introduced to this sort of foodcourt like place, which is basically just zinc covered under a big tree along Jalan Tun Sri Lanang.

Its more of a breakfast place and the chicken rice ball finish up by 12.30pm, so be early ;). For RM3.50 per pax, you get 6 chicken rice balls and a serving of chicken. Otherwise its just RM1.50 for 6 balls of chicken rice alone. To me, chicken is just the side dish that I can do without, you can eat the chicken rice ball on its own as it is very tasty especially when you add on the chili sauce. This stall home made the chicken rice ball and just chop up and serve them here.

In the same area, you will also find Seng Lee which sells Hee Kiaw Mee, its just fishballs and fish paste noodles typically but the serving is also different. It reminds me of the similar one I had in Taiping, but that is served with lai fun. So basically, the noodles of your choice, dried or soup, served with fishball, fish paste (coloured orange), some pork and a nice spoon chili paste to mix! RM2.80 for regular and RM3.50 for the large one.

Didn’t have enough space in my stomach to try the wantan mee but I am very satisfied with the chicken rice ball and the hee kiaw mee. A recommended breakfast place in Melaka for me ;).
