Last month when we were in Penang, we noticed this place, Goh Teo Kee that have interesting pictures of Teow Chew dishes outside. So during the weekend trip to Penang, we decided to stop by. Restoran Goh Teo Kee is located just next to 7-11 on Gurney Drive.

We went there for lunch and at first, we called to reserve a table and when we got there, we were the only customers! But end up we are early for lunch as most customers got in later and its getting packed too, so advise is again, go early!

The wait for food is a bit long here, that also shows they put effort in their food but it is very good! We love almost all the dishes here! The wait is well worth it!

The vegetable here is fried with just garlic like most place but they add some crispy thin salted fish, makes the whole dish different! We ordered a stir fried oysters, sort of with sauce and its very good, no fishy smell meaning oysters are fresh and perfect for rice!

The crispy salty pork is nice too, crunchy in a way but a little bit fatty, then again, no fat no good ;). The stir fried fish is big in size and the fish is deep fried with flour before stir frying, giving it a nice feel when biting into the fish, thumbs up.

Braised pork ribs is good too with some mini buns to go with it and the pork is braised soft and tender. The claypot seafood is surprisingly generous with it price, we got sea cucumber and some other seafood in it.

The finale to me is their dessert of steam yam (oo-ni) with ginko and sesame on top, very nicely done and not sweet and not oily! The only complain was the yam was a bit cold but I think they were waiting for us to finish our food before serving.

Our meal cost us RM118 for all the above, quite reasonable la. If you are around Penang and feel like some good Teow Chew food, make sure you head there for a try ;).

Just nearby the Pulau Tikus wet market, a popular place to makan is at Restoran Kwai Lock. There are various choices of Penang hawkers food here but again like most places in Penang, be early for more choices, better seats and shorter waiting time.

Array

Its a bit smokey in Kwai Lock as most of the hawkers fried their servings away on the street just outside the coffeeshop. There are just so many good selections of hawkers food to choose from over here. I started with the stall outside selling chee cheong fun and various local kueh. The chee cheong fun looks good and I see a lot of people ordering but wasn’t in a mood for it that morning, so I went for some chai kueh instead. I think it was 9am then and only a few pieces left. The chai kueh is pretty ok with some red sour spicy chili sauce to go with it.

The wantan mee here are served with bbq pork, mushroom and wantan… every stall seems to have their own style! The hokkien mee here is quite ok but didn’t really satisfied me, so I ordered a plate of fried mee suah. The fried mee suah is a bit wet with prawns and pork and the chili to go with it is superb, love it!

Surprisingly the curry mee here does not have pig’s blood but it was ok. Most of the noodles cost RM3 each, still ok. The roti bakar is cheap, at RM1.00 only and they provide you with a satay stick so you don’t have to get your hands dirty and sticky, pretty good idea ;).

Since I was staying at Pulau Tikus, I visited Poly Cafe just down the road for breakfast. From previous visits, this place can get very pack in the late morning and afternoon. So, we got there early morning at 8am plus for breakfast.

Array

I like their roti babi (similar to KL’s Yut Kee) here, known as Choo’s Roti Babi, you can choose whether its spicy or non. Basically toast like bread with pork/vege inside, deep fried to cripsed but can be a bit oily. It cost RM2.50 or was it RM2.80 per piece. Quite nice and they have various other style as well.

Array

Next to it is an aunty selling Penang style curry mee with pig’s blood, prawns, cuttlefish, fishball added with dark spicy chili paste instead of chicken and greens like in KL. Its pretty good and the curry is lighter to me. It paid RM2.80 for the curry.

Array

The wantan mee and hokkien mee stall here is also popular, I remembered the previous visit, we waited really long for the wantan mee! The wantan mee comes with bbq pork and some chicken. There are various other stalls here as well, but only got 1 stomach la… hehehe…

Array

Oh ya, we also got some apong from the apong stall stationed outside, its very good and nice but the wait is long as there are always people waiting and packing away 10-30 pieces each time ;). It used to have a very good lobak stall here, wonder where did it go? Anyone know?

New Lane is one of my favourite night eateries when it comes to hawker food in Penang… there are just so much to offer here that you want to eat everything! It just located on the road outside Sunway Hotel but parking is really a challenge here but I had learnt that the best is to park at Lorong Kinta or Lorong Macalister (turn in from Jalan Burma) and walk there.

The anchor food place here I would say is Restoran Sin Yin Nam, which my favourite chee cheong chuk (pork intestine porridge) is located right outside. Its a super yummy bowl of porrige served with bbq pork (char siew), crispy deep fried pork intestine and boiled intestine. You can ask for other parts like the tongue or stomach if you fancy. Per bowl have gone up to RM4.50 on my recent visit but good thing is quality is still very good!

Array

Array

The pork satay here is also very good, especially the pork intestine satay, no strong smell, very soft and tasty! So good that we ordered a 2nd round after our first order, 20 pieces cost RM15.00 for us but well worth it!

Array

The other good stuff here are their chee cheong fun which are served with prawn paste, Penang style, very nice but can’t eat much, too strong for me :). The fried oysters and char koay teow is also not bad la, koay teow is RM3 while oysters small one is RM7.

Array

Array

Array

I also ordered some popiah and over here in Penang, they like to soak their popiah with some soup, so you eat it wet at RM2.80 for 2 pieces. I also tried their chicken feet wantan mee here inside Sin Yin Nam to see if they can fight with kulim one. Its RM2.80 for the wantan mee alone and add RM1.50 for chicken feet. The wantan mee noodles itself is not as good, but taste is alright. Sides topping on the wantan mee is a lot for RM2.80 though, got bbq pork, mushrooms, fried wantan and porkball! The chicken feet is not bad too, very soft and yummy!

Array

Price are really not cheap here, mainly I think thanks to us tourist but good thing is, food quality is still thumbs up ;).

This van in Tanjung Bungah just before Batu Ferringi is another must visit for me when I am in Penang, unfortunately, this visit, they ran out of their famous goreng pisang (banana fritters… :( ). They used riped bananas and I observed that they fried the bananas twice before the fritters is ready.

Array

Array

The yam fritters here are nice too, don’t know why but the yam is soft like cotton here when you bite into the fritters. The nian gao fried with yam and sweet potato is also good here.

Array

Lesson learnt, best time to visit is mid noon, after 5pm, might not get anymore yummy banana fritters! Anyhow I bought a mix of the rest, about RM7 plus for 10 pieces. Nevertheless, I am still very satisfied with the yam fritters ;).

But.. how good is their goreng pisang, see this old pix I took last year and you will know ;)
