We didn’t know what to eat one afternoon and wanted to try something new and so John says he will take us to this shop his friend took him in SS3, PJ. I had actually passed Chiew Sang many times but thought they only sells bak kut teh.

The moment you walked in to Chiew Sang you will see an Indian guy making the bak kut teh in front, as Brian called it Indian BKT… LOL…

Anyhow, we got a table for 8 and John ordered their famous fried fish head, some clear soup bak kut teh, their stewed bak kut teh, a tofu plus a vege dish.

The fried fish head is very tasty with a good hint of spiciness in it, very appetizing to go with rice. Fish is fresh and we almost cleaned the plate.

I like the clear soup bak kut teh, this is almost the teow chew style, clear but yet tasty and light. The only unfortunate part is that we ordered for 3 and the portion is still relatively small.

The other dish we had is the stewed bak kut teh, this is something new, basically they are very tasty stewed pork, very tender and tasty with the nice and thick stewed sauce.

I enjoyed the lunch here very much but only thing for me is the portion is a little small, so you gotta order a bit more and the price is not that cheap, so be prepared to spend a little more but at least the food here is good :).

PJ: Lunch at Sri Nyonya Restaurant
icon1 Cupnoodles | icon2 Klang Valley, Places to Eat, Selangor | icon4 09 23rd, 2010| icon3Comments Off on PJ: Lunch at Sri Nyonya Restaurant

My sis buzzed me one afternoon as she wanted to take me to a good nyonya restaurant in PJ, so we made arrangement and the family was there for lunch on Sunday. I soon realised that this is Sri Nyonya, which was one of the very popular Nyonya restaurant located in PJ in the early days.

In business for 24 years, Sri Nyonya serves up Authentic Penang Nyonya cuisines and you can find out much more at their website.

The owner, Mr. James Kuok explained to me that they put in alot of effort to ensure hygiene in the restaurant, where it is fully netted and air conditioned to be fly-free. What also impressed me is their passion of cooking Penang Nyonya cuisines where they stay true to how the dishes are supposed to be with authentic ingredients.

Greedy as usual we order a whole lot of signature dishes which are the beef rendang, lamb kurma, nasi ulam, kerabu paku, ikan gulai tumis, ju hu char, fried chicken and prawn omelette. You can really see the authentic-ness and amount of effort required in each of these dishes… bravo!

For dessert we tried both the cendol and also bubur pulut hitam accompanied by some Nyonya kueh. As we are not fans of sweet-ness, we are glad that the desserts are not too sweet but yet retaining all the flavours in them.

I noticed that the shop had 2 set of coffee machines plus the Lavazza sign and I asked James if they serve it here and he gladly told me that he have been enjoying and making these true coffee since the 1950’s. James took the trouble to made me a cup of cappuccino while explaining the process along the way. I have to say that the cappuccino if good and milky rich.

Overall, the food here is great, James and the family that runs the place is friendly and passionate plus there’s great coffee to finish the meal off. For those whom had miss the good taste at Sri Nyonya, its time to look them up again ;).

PJ: Roast Pork @ Restoran Siew Yok
icon1 Cupnoodles | icon2 Klang Valley, Places to Eat, Selangor | icon4 08 28th, 2010| icon3Comments Off on PJ: Roast Pork @ Restoran Siew Yok

I was out in Taman Megah for lunch and we saw this new restaurant opened up next to Restoran Fu Kua that’s specialising in Roast Pork and the name of the place says it all Restoran Siew Yok!

This bright red sign board restaurant offers roast pork (siew yok) in a few varieties, they have the Yellow Gold which is the crispy version, Melting Gold which is less crispy but inside is softer and tender and the last is Black Gold which the skin is black in color as a result of a black vinegar being applied on it while roasting.

They also offers 3 types of char siew (bbq pork) which is the sweet (hint of chinese wine), sweet savoury (classic dark look) and spicy (tangy, sweet with a kick) variants. They also have a list of other special orders as well from big slap of roast pork to ribs, roast duck, goose, etc.

Both the siew yok ad char siew are offer at RM13.50 for a small plate, RM25.00 for medium and RM 35.00 for a big plate. I must say, pork is getting really expensive these days!

We ordered a large Trifecta (RM35.00) on the menu, which is a mixture of all the 3 types of siew yok offered and a small plate of the sweet char siew.

The yellow gold is crispy as promised, the melting gold is softer and black gold, can’t taste too much of the vinegar but quiet unique, overall its not bad but a bit costly in my opinion. The sweet char siew’s wine flavouring is a bit too strong but quite tasty.

Overall food is ok (its siew yok after all) but pricing is a bit on the high side on my opinion.
