When someone mentioned Ipoh chicken rice in Jalan Gasing, a lot of people would have visited this popular place just opposite EPF & Shell/BHP station along Jalan Gasing. But some may not know that next to it, at the corner is another good Ipoh chicken rice place.

Restoran Satelite have been around for more than 40 years and I used this used to be my every Sunday breakfast place for quite a while when I was young whenever me and my dad went up to Bukit Gasing on Sunday morning for a walk.
Restoran Satelite

There are 2 stalls here, Ipoh chicken rice and wantan mee. Besides chicken rice, the first stall also offer chicken hor fun, curry chicken (pretty good too!), sour spicy vege, etc. To me, the chicken rice here is just as good as the famous shop next door, less commercial and very good old school feel.

The other stalls which is my favourite sells wantan mee, the nice thing about their wantan mee are the soup, so I always go for soup base wantan mee here rather than dried one and their wantan itself.
Satelite Wantan Mee

With oldies playing on the background and have a nice cup of ice barley lime on a hot day with wantan mee or chicken rice definately gives a good feel ;). Pricing here is standard PJ pricing la, about RM5.50 for a bowl of noodles plus ice drink.

Its been a while since I visited Seng Weng Yong Tau Foo for lunch in Kg Cempaka, PJ. Things have changed a lot here, they have now reduced the size of their yong tau foo kitchen and have incorporated stalls to sell mix rice, char koay teow, chicken rice, etc. They have also extended to the next door unit to provide more seating place.

The chicken rice stall here provides really value lunch meal, a plate of standard chicken rice goes for RM3.00 here. Yup, RM3.00 in the midst of all the increased fuel prices and the whole economy going into recession. So, if want to save money, this is the place to eat!

The chicken rice of standard portion, rice plus roast chicken and a bowl of soup. Joe asked for extra sauce as its a bit dry and the lady offered us the chicken sauce gathered during roasting. The sauce is thick and you just need to dip a little with your chicken and it makes a lot of difference. Plus, its only RM3.00, what you want la???

I saw this place weeks ago when I was scouting for a place for dinner in Paramount (its just few doors away from famous charcoal hokkien mee, Mei Yen)with Sky and saw that it was quite packed. So last weekend, a few of us decided to get together for dinner and I suggested that we have steamboat since its a cold night and most of the gang were tired having to work overtime.

They are having a promotion, their usual buffet is RM21.80 but its now RM18.80 per pax (exclude drinks and tax) and you get to choose 3 different choices for your soup. We got peanuts soup, chicken soup and tomyam. The peanut is nice, very flavourful but got a bit salty after putting too much good stuff in it while cooking our food. The chicken is normal la and tomyam is not too sour but not enough kick. Overall, I like the peanut the most!

The food here is quite fresh and there are various choices from seafood to pork, chicken, all sort of meat and fish balls, vegetables, noodles, mushrooms, etc. The important thing is that they are fresh and clean, but the size is a bit small but good also, means can eat more different types ;).

There are also cooked food at the sides like fried rice, meehoon, fried chicken, etc. There are also ice creams and cakes as desserts, eat all you want!

At the end of the meal for 6 of us cost RM154 inclusive of buffet, beers, drinks and tax. The friendly boss also gave us a discount card, if you bring 3 persons, you get 20% yourself, bring 6 and get 50% yourself and if you bring 9 persons, you eat free!

I was browsing around the web for makan place, came across a blog entry by KY and thought I gave it a try since we will be in that area for lunch. When we are in that area, KC kept saying that is his parent’s breakfast place and when we parked our car, I spotted KC’s dad’s car and alerted him. He say straight away said… “See I told you so” and pick up his phone to call his dad. Then I start to wonder, hey wait… I thought his dad change to a Myvi already? Then Julian added maybe his dad take out for a spin once a while… I was thinking to myself… ya make sense. Then… our friend KC come smiling and say “he sold this car already la”…. lol… blur la our friend, still think its his dad’s car :P.

The Makan Gang

Anyhow, back to the food, so we proceeded to Chong Loy for their wantan mee, the thing about this shop is you can’t really see their signboard, they sort of cover it with a canvas at the shop front to shade the seats in front of the shop.

They offer a variety of toppings here to go with your wantan or rice even, from the normal roasted meat stuff like roast duck, bbq pork, roast pork, roast chicken to braised dishes like braised hakka pork, beef tripe and ginger duck. So you have a variety here to choose from.

Beef Tripe Wantan Mee Chicken Wantan Mee Roast Duck Wantan Mee Ginger Duck Wantan Mee

I had the roast duck wantan noodles, it cost me RM5.10 for a mid size (1 1/2 noodles) plus a glass of warm chinese tea :). The noodles are ok, but a bit oily, taste is standard but what is nice is the huge variety of toppings available to choose from :).

Down at Sunway Mas Commercial Center in PJ… I was brought by Elaine to eat at Restoran 88, according to her, the prices are very affordable here. So we decided to give it a try although usually when Elaine say its cheap we doubt it because her taste are very high!

Elaine & Kit YeeSteamed Talapia Fish

But Elaine was right, its prices are alright for Chinese dishes in PJ… we ordered a steamed talapia fish “cheong ching” style which is basically covered with a thick sauce after steaming. The steam talapia cost RM12.00 which is quite ok. The fish is fresh and the sauce is not bad, appetizing and not too strong.

Next is RM8.00 for a plate of tofu, its fried tofu covered with minced pork on top. The minced pork are plenty the tofu, it’s superbly small in size and you get 8 of them! According to Elaine, the portion have shrunk a lot since the last she came, everyone trying to cut cost? Damn fuel prices… :(

Fried Tofu with Minced PorkSalted Fish Pork Cake

Fried VegetablesTheir salted fish pork cake looks pretty good on the menu, so I thought we gave it a try, RM8.00 as well for 8 pieces but the size is more acceptable for this one. You don’t really eat chunks and pieces of salted fish but the moment you take a bite, you get a nice hint of salted fish fragrant.

We stopped our orders here (we also want to cut cost!), because they offered free soup to their customers and that particular day its old cucumber soup. But the waitress, then told us they are having a promotion now, RM3.00 for the vegetables of the day! So how can we resist? ;).

Overall we are happy with our meals, taste is good and price is acceptable :).
