Restoran New Seaview have been around for a very long time in PJ… I remember when I was a teenage kid, I used to frequent there for lunch as my uncle was just staying a few blocks behind the place. Not sure if the name was the same back then… can’t remember but most of the stalls are still around.

I remembered the Teow Chew Duck Rice & Porridge stall was already there back then… this stalls sells teow chew style braised duck served with a choice of rice or porridge. I ordered it with rice and it comes with a plate of rice, covered with yummy braised duck gravvy, a plate of braised duck with some braised egg and most important of all, salted vegetables!

The taste is a bit on the sweet side but the ducks are tendered and salted vegetables are very appetizing… in all, I paid about RM4.50 for it.

It has been almost a year since our last eel fishing outing in the rice bowl of Selangor in Sekinchan. It is said that Sekinchan produced one the best quality rice in the country. With its paddy fields covering the entire landscape, also means that there’s opportunity for other nature’s lifeform to grow and one of them are eels. When the paddy field is being harvested, the water level are lowered and this is the best time to fish for eels as they will be trapped in their nest, hungry waiting for the water level to increase again.

I tweet about the trip few weeks ago and next thing you know, we got a convoy of 6 cars heading to Sekinchan for eel fishing. Everyone was pretty excited about the trip, especially after I told them they have to make their own fishing rod. We got all sort of innovation, from the normal fishing rod, my dad use bamboo sticks then we have the creative guys who uses pvc pipes and even a broom stick (I shall not mention names :P)!

Anyhow, we departed a little later than we wanted that early morning and made a stop at Restoran Poek Poek 88 (GPS: N3 25.471 E101 10.560) in Tanjung Karang for a quick breakfast. This is a corner shop next to Maybank and the Tanjung Karang bridge. This is a family run coffeeshop, so with a big group like us, they are struggling to take order and serve ;). I like their nasi lemak here, the coconut milk fragrant is nice and so is the sambal. Their noodles are not bad too, especially the chicken feet noodles.

After breakfast, we headed out to the paddy fields and it took a while for everyone to get ready to get into action. Lucky my dad was around to help them tie the strings and hook on the bait. Soon, all of us got into action and everyone is scattered around looking for eels, by then its already 10am.

Soon, we started calling out each other and looks like everyone either can find an eel’s hole or no eel is at home even if we found one. Except for Jack and Ciku whom found hole with eel but they end up feeding the eel and not catching it as they just can’t seems to get the eel on hook :(.

After getting burnt and tired of more than 2 hours of trying, we decided to call it a day and guess what, my dad who started almost half an hour later than everyone, got 5 eels himself alone! Haha… 1 guy agaisnt us 20 and we caught nothing! Worst is when I got back, everyone keep asking how many eels I caught! hahaha… super pai seh! Anyhow, no worries, just no luck and lack of time but I shall be back!

Everyone was dissapointed but got pretty excited when my dad brought his eels back, that’s when all the cameras came out again, before this everyone is just taking scenery pix, haha…

After packing up, we head to Bagan Sekinchan for lunch and my cousin Jerry brought us to this shop Jiann Chyi Restaurant (if you heading from Kuala S’gor, turn left after Caltex in Sekinchan town, then all the way to T-junction turn right and its on your left). Behind the restaurant are basically the fishing jetty, so be assured that the seafood here are fresh. What we came for is their famous spicy shark porridge! Its basically small shark cook in porridge teochew style with fishball. There’s a lot of soup like the normal teochew porridge and the porridge is still a bit hard like rice. The shark meat is surprisingly soft and tender (that is why they use small sharks) and these are fresh catch from the sea.

The next dish is their tiger shark braised with pig’s intestines and pork. Its just like the usual braised pork but you got very soft shark meat (after braising) with it, this is good for rice. We also got some vege, fried small prawns (peeled) and fried mantis prawns (a bit small in size) which is quite usual.

The other thing I like here is their fried sotong (squid), its just the ordinary deep fried in flour but the squid is so fresh that when you bite into it, its soft and a sweet seafood taste in them! I would say the 2 best thing about this shop is their spicy shark porridge and their fried squid!

For 2 tables of 19 persons (Jack & family paid separately for their table), its cost us a total of RM 247.00, which is very reasonable and definately a must come back for many of us!

Anyhow, although it was an eel-less trip for many of us I think we all enjoyed ourselves and would definately be back the hunt eels again plus yummy food. But its not that bad, many of us got home with mangoes and sweet corns (RM1 each) along the roadside ;). But at the end, I guess, no one can be as disappointed as Jack, second time eel fishing and still no eels 😛

Penang – Hawkers Food @ New Lane (Lorong Baru), Georgetown

New Lane is one of my favourite night eateries when it comes to hawker food in Penang… there are just so much to offer here that you want to eat everything! It just located on the road outside Sunway Hotel but parking is really a challenge here but I had learnt that the best is to park at Lorong Kinta or Lorong Macalister (turn in from Jalan Burma) and walk there.

The anchor food place here I would say is Restoran Sin Yin Nam, which my favourite chee cheong chuk (pork intestine porridge) is located right outside. Its a super yummy bowl of porrige served with bbq pork (char siew), crispy deep fried pork intestine and boiled intestine. You can ask for other parts like the tongue or stomach if you fancy. Per bowl have gone up to RM4.50 on my recent visit but good thing is quality is still very good!

The pork satay here is also very good, especially the pork intestine satay, no strong smell, very soft and tasty! So good that we ordered a 2nd round after our first order, 20 pieces cost RM15.00 for us but well worth it!

The other good stuff here are their chee cheong fun which are served with prawn paste, Penang style, very nice but can’t eat much, too strong for me :). The fried oysters and char koay teow is also not bad la, koay teow is RM3 while oysters small one is RM7.

I also ordered some popiah and over here in Penang, they like to soak their popiah with some soup, so you eat it wet at RM2.80 for 2 pieces. I also tried their chicken feet wantan mee here inside Sin Yin Nam to see if they can fight with kulim one. Its RM2.80 for the wantan mee alone and add RM1.50 for chicken feet. The wantan mee noodles itself is not as good, but taste is alright. Sides topping on the wantan mee is a lot for RM2.80 though, got bbq pork, mushrooms, fried wantan and porkball! The chicken feet is not bad too, very soft and yummy!
