Its been a while since I visited Seng Weng Yong Tau Foo for lunch in Kg Cempaka, PJ. Things have changed a lot here, they have now reduced the size of their yong tau foo kitchen and have incorporated stalls to sell mix rice, char koay teow, chicken rice, etc. They have also extended to the next door unit to provide more seating place.

The chicken rice stall here provides really value lunch meal, a plate of standard chicken rice goes for RM3.00 here. Yup, RM3.00 in the midst of all the increased fuel prices and the whole economy going into recession. So, if want to save money, this is the place to eat!

The chicken rice of standard portion, rice plus roast chicken and a bowl of soup. Joe asked for extra sauce as its a bit dry and the lady offered us the chicken sauce gathered during roasting. The sauce is thick and you just need to dip a little with your chicken and it makes a lot of difference. Plus, its only RM3.00, what you want la???

This guy in USJ2 named his nyonya style curry noodles after himself, Fu Shoulou, direct translation means Moustache Man as how the boss looks like. You will see him standing at his stall there coordinating his workers around. Business looks good here, as the noodles sell fast and you can see the 3-4 workers cooked and served non stop.

The curry is light in color but very tasty and is served with tau pok, long beans and topping of your choice. You can choose roast pork (siew yok) - RM5.00, string rays curry - RM5.00 or lala seafood - RM15.00. The curry noodles is very nice, light and tasty, I got the roast pork one and its really nice. I heard the lala seafood one is big and packed with goodies!

I thought that simple things like char siew rice will be universal and same throughout the country… but here in Melaka, they eat it differently. Firstly, when they say ‘char sau fan’ (bbq pork rice in Malaysia) it means roast pork or siew yok in Cantonese. Anyway, its a combination of everything anyway, so what is everything?

First of all, you gotta make your way to Jalan Bunga Raya in Melaka town, look out for Medan Makan Bunga Raya. When I was there that day, there are 3 stalls selling the same thing. The crowd puller are the 2 main stalls in front.

The stall on the left (once you enter) opens earlier while the stalls on your right only open at 12pm. I was there at 11 plus, so I ordered from the left stall. We got a mix, which is roast pork, bbq pork and eggs. Its basically fried eggs, chopped to big slices with the meat. Some gravy is added and the boss will ask if you want curry on it. We opted to have the curry on a separate bowl plus some sambal to go with it. The curry is similar to those I had at the Hainan Curry Rice in Klang or the Malim Jaya Curry Rice style. But I prefer to take it with the sambal, very different and interesting! The are also other choices like vegetables, etc. you can add, all unique to the stall. For the one we had is RM3.50 per plate, catching up with KL soon but still cheaper :).

As we were eating, the stall on the right finally opens at about 12, the boss wheeled in the dishes on a three wheeled bicycle and started placing the roast pork, bbq pork, roast duck, sausages, vegetables, etc. on the stall. As this is happening, people started coming out of no where to order! The moment the boss start chopping, he doesn’t stop! Kiasu me order some siew yok (roast pork) for takeaway. Its really different, the meat is tender, the distribution of fat and meat is good plus the skin of the roast pork is very tasty, almost like a good rub of bbq pork sauce on top *thumbs up*, yummy.

The thing that amused me the most is that, at like sushi bar, we go and sit at the counter and watch the chef make the sushi and serve to you. Well here, its the same style, just that its roast pork and bbq pork rice, many locals just grab a stool and sit at the stall to dine :).

I would really recommend to give it a try, both stalls have their own customer base on different preference but I like the right stall better :).

This is a really simple recipe, you basically need nice cuts of pork belly with skin, the part with bones are the best. Simply wash the meat, optionally I like to rub the meat with a little bit of chinese cooking wine and let it sit for a few minutes.

Then mix five spices powder and fine salt together, I use about 3/4 tablespoons of five spice and 1 1/4 tablespoons of salt. Its really up to your taste, just rub them on the bottom part of the pork belly and place them a rack.

Then cover the top part of the skins with coarse salt and all you need to do now is roast it! Heat up the oven to about 150-170 degrees and put the meat in for about 15-20 minutes. Oh ya, make sure you put a tray at the bottom of the rack to catch all the oil that’s gonna flow down.

You will notice that the salt becomes harden like crystal, then take the meat out and remove the salt, just use a spoon or knife to rub them off. Once that is done, put it back to the oven at low heat, I did it at less than 100 degrees for about 10-15 minutes until the skin are crispy.

Then chop them up hot and serve :)

Its was a beautiful Sunday morning and the weather is cooling, so I decided to take my MTB out for a ride since I need to test it after tuning it yesterday at the shop. The bike felt much better but it start to drizzle as I leave home but luck is on my side, as I go further, the weather got better. I took a big round cutting to the back of KK and into the park area opposite the shops. I passed by this park so many times, but I guess when you are driving, you basically just speed by and don’t bother about the scenic view. So, I stopped to enjoy the view, dream that the big bungalow by the lake for sale will be mine soon and snaps some shoots :P

I was rounding the shops in KK for breakfast and decided to stopped at Restoran MCF. Passed by this place a lot of times but never tried. So I parked the bike up front and went in, turns out they are selling all sort of mee hoon, mainly with fish. They also serve it with prawns, roast pork and all sort of varieties. Price is not cheap, cheapest is about RM6 for a bowl of mee hoon with fish, but the serving are generous.

Since I just had seafood the night before, I decided to go with roast pork. It comes in 2 bowls, first one are dried mee hoon top with roast pork and fried pork lard. Accompanying it is a bowl of vege in stock soup. Its not bad, but a little dry and I told myself I should have just order the fish one which everyone is eating, hehehe… overall is ok, I think I should be back to try the fish one. Its basically soup mee hoon served with 2 piece of deep fried fish.

As I got home, all tired and ready to just drop dead, my dog stared at me and reminds me that he needs his walk… arghh… so here’s a video of him at the park ;). So many things in 1 Sunday morning :)
