Weekend Trip to Batam

I was a mad rush for the week to make sure that I settle all my stuff at work and although I was tired, I felt good on Friday morning as we make our way to Batam via Singapore. Its been a while since we had our family trip and this time I have my two nephews with us as well.

We decided to travel by Aeroline to Singapore as it stops at Harbour Front where we could convinently change to our ferry to Batam (no choice la since AirAsia cancelled its direct flight to Batam, what a pity!). The only problem I had taking Aeroline is that Sunway Pyramid decided to hold a fire drill exercise that morning and sort of block off the road to the Aeroline stop, we had to do a tour to the service basement and took the lift up with 2 kids and a whole bunch of luggages, it was havoc but we made it!

This is my first experience on Aeroline and we got the double deck, which is a 30 seaters with seats pre-allocated from my online booking. Downstairs is a small lounge that fits 6 and a light usage toilet and pantry. The seats are really comfortable and spacious and there’s power socket at the both sides the bus on every row making charging of notebooks, phones, PDAs, etc. easy. Too bad they don’t have WIFI like how Oddessy does.

For the journey to Singapore, the service was really good and we were pampered with subway sandwiches, bottomless hot drinks and mineral waters. Only problem was the LCD screen showing the movie wasn’t bright enough and there’s no individual earphones, so volume had to be kept low to avoid distrupting other passengers :(.

Anyhow, it was an enjoyable ride but our coach captain was taking a bit too long and my nephews really lost patience in Johor, I kept getting “are we there yet?”, “how many more hours?”, “why so long one?”… you can imagine the rest. The only hassle of taking a bus to Singapore is having to depart to get go through immigration and when going through Singapore we had to carry all our luggages down to crossover. Maybe driving isn’t that bad the next time *wonders*.

The bus stopped at harbour center and soon we were met by the representatives from Indah Puri Golf in Batam whom helped us to arrange for our tickets and we just left our luggages with them to check in for us. So we finally can move freely and decided to grab our late lunch before taking a short stroll in Vivocity.

We went to the Tuck Shop on the 3rd floor and I ordered the Dry Ramen for S$4.00, portion is small but its very tasty! The coffee here is excellent, very thick, not too cheap and rich with flavours.

After the quick meal, we hang around Vivocity a little then boarded the ferry, its quite systematic as per how they do everything in Singapore. First you are presented with a smartcard rather than holding a ticket upon check in. You will need to scan your smartcard before going through Immigration to exit. In the waiting lounge, its still a bit confusing but the smartcard are colour coded based on different ferry and departure. They will call out the ferry name when you can board and you have to scan your card again and if you miss the boarding, they can check the computer and announce the pending passengers, pretty cool ;). Then just before boarding the ferry, they will collect the card and scan it again to make sure you really board the right ferry.

We boarded the Sea Princess ferry to Batam, its really a small ferry and most of the Indonesians in the ferry will book their seats by placing their bags on the seat and go off smoking. Some of them will just put their bags on the seat next to them, so although its half filled, you still have to find place to sit. This ferry is slower too, from my GPS, its moving average of 30-33km/h and took about 45 minutes before reaching.

In Batam, we are greeted by Indah Puri staff and got an “express” passing through Immigration and transfered to the resort. TIm’s place is pretty neat, facing the sea with the view on one side Singapore and the other side Batam town. Since its the ground unit, just open up the glass doors and its windy throughout the day and balcony makes a perfect place for bbq or a nice morning and afternoon tea ;).

That night, we head to Golden Prawns Restaurant for seafood, there’s 2 of them, one is Golden Prawns 555 and the other is Golden Prawns 933. I read in some blogs that they serve the same food, about the same price and taste too. We went to Golden Prawns 555 and ordered a host of seafood, unfortunately we are seating outdoor on wooden tilts by the sea, so its too dark to take pix of the food.

The oats prawns here is good, fresh and everything fried to perfect crisp, I just ate the whole prawns without having to border to peel off the skin or head. One of the crab style I have yet to taste in Malaysia is Black Pepper Crabs which I had here. Its really nice, the crabs are fresh firstly (what am I talking about, all the seafood are live here!) and its fried with a light coat of black pepper sauce but cooked out dry. ITs superbly tasty and you will just get addictive with it. The other good dish here is their garoupa fish, the taste are just so so but the fish meat have this “qq” bouncy taste. Accordingly to my dad (who was a fish farmer), this fish are caught from the sea and not those farmed in kelong judging from the texture of the meat. Plus a few regular dishes and drinks, bill come up to about 700,000 rupiah, that’s about RM260.00. Is it cheap, well, it could be cheaper in Indonesia but then again, this place are spoilt by willing to spend Singaporeans, so by that standard, I would say it was ok :).

The next morning we had a good breakfast of home baked breads, muffins, cakes and jam by my sis, all of them are great good especially love the bread and banana cakes. It was really relaxing just sitting facing the sea and enjoying breakfast, then… “suk suk, are we going swimming?”… aiks… time to bring the little monster for a swim. The swimming pool is located next to a driving range overlooking the sea and tennis courts. There’s a small gym by the pool and the pool itself is huge, with 4 different pool and depth joining together, so its for kids as well as adult.

We have our lunch at the coffee house in Indah Puri and the view here is just amazing facing the entire golf course. The food and drinks here are priced in Singapore dollars. It cost from S$6.00 to S$10.00 for a meal here. The food is not bad, I had a sup buntut goreng, basically its the cow’s tail cooked in soup then having the meat fried in sauce serving it with rice and some crackers. There’s a spa below the club house offering traditional massages at about S$20.00 1 hour.

We head to town for some shopping after that, Nagoya is the most developed commercial area for shopping here and we got down at Matahari @ Nagoya Hill. Its a big hypermart here and most of the things are available here, expect for one thing, we just can’t seems to find fresh milk anywhere, strange. We got our food, drinks and seasoning for the night’s bbq and drop by a Polo outlet on the way back. The prices at Polo here is not cheap, after 50% discount, it still cost RM120.00 for a shirt. We could get much cheaper prices in Bandung and everything here is money, even the tour bus outside parked by the roadside needs to pay the store’s guard.

That night, we had a nice and simple bbq and I was dead tired by the end of the day (partly taking care of the kids too). The next day, I got an early ferry back to Singapore for my morning bus back to KL to attend good buddy Kevin & Ashley’s wedding dinner. The ferry back was a bigger one, Batam fast and its more comfortable, bigger and faster, clocking about 40-43km/h on my GPS.

It was a good experience, I am glad I went and I definitely look forward to another trip there, but perhaps allocating more time to just relax and unwind there ;).

I saw this place weeks ago when I was scouting for a place for dinner in Paramount (its just few doors away from famous charcoal hokkien mee, Mei Yen)with Sky and saw that it was quite packed. So last weekend, a few of us decided to get together for dinner and I suggested that we have steamboat since its a cold night and most of the gang were tired having to work overtime.

They are having a promotion, their usual buffet is RM21.80 but its now RM18.80 per pax (exclude drinks and tax) and you get to choose 3 different choices for your soup. We got peanuts soup, chicken soup and tomyam. The peanut is nice, very flavourful but got a bit salty after putting too much good stuff in it while cooking our food. The chicken is normal la and tomyam is not too sour but not enough kick. Overall, I like the peanut the most!

The food here is quite fresh and there are various choices from seafood to pork, chicken, all sort of meat and fish balls, vegetables, noodles, mushrooms, etc. The important thing is that they are fresh and clean, but the size is a bit small but good also, means can eat more different types ;).

There are also cooked food at the sides like fried rice, meehoon, fried chicken, etc. There are also ice creams and cakes as desserts, eat all you want!

At the end of the meal for 6 of us cost RM154 inclusive of buffet, beers, drinks and tax. The friendly boss also gave us a discount card, if you bring 3 persons, you get 20% yourself, bring 6 and get 50% yourself and if you bring 9 persons, you eat free!

It was a rough and tiring week for me… feeling my ultraman’s light beeping low batt warning after lunch, Joe suggested we go for lunch at Sentul since its on the way back from our meeting. So we head on to Restoran Makanan Laut Zhen Liew Siang in Sentul Raya in KL.

At first I thought Joe was referring to Restoran Makanan Laut Lau Heong (Lau Heong is Cantones for Liew Siang) in Sentul Perdana. So I was a bit confused when Joe brought me there. According to Joe, he used to dined there since the Jalan Ipoh time, and after moving to Sentul, there’s sort of a break off and therefore you have 2 of them.

But this one in Chinese, Zhen Liew Siang means the original Liew Siang ;). Anyhow, since there are just 3 of us, we ordered the ever famous stringray with szechuan style chili on top, steamed. Then the must have sotong and prawns sizzling on banana leaf! We add a fried sweet potato leaf just to balance up our diet :).

To me, the taste in both place is yummy and very good! You just gotta have rice and you will, add rice for the sotong and prawns dish! Each of us got a huge prawns and a bunch of sotong, only complain not enough of the yummy sauce to take with rice!

The stringray is excellent too, soft and the chili sauce on top makes it perfect, again with rice! So, be prepare to add more rice eating here, you can’t resist, trust me.

Total meal comes to RM45.00 for 3 person :). Joe also recommended other dishes here like their curry fish head and deep fried pork knuckle, I will save those next time when we have more people joining.

Open: 11am to 3pm, 5.30pm to 11pm.

Con’t from part 4…

After a good meal in Kluang… we head out to our stop for the night, Tanjung Piai Resort, it was a long and tiring drive considering we just had lunch, its hot outside and we are on 2 hours of small roads all the way from Kluang to Simpang Renggam to Benut then Pontian before reaching Kukup. On the way to Kukup there are various fruits stalls to pick up local produces like pineapples, dragon fruits, etc. We got some duku langsat at RM2.00 per kilo, they are really big and super sweet!

Kukup was like packed with people and cars, its like a big market and really crowded on the street. We had wanted to stay in Kukup but all the places here are full and some don’t even entertain us saying our group is too small for them *wtf*?

We initially thought the resort is in Kukup but when we are there and a few phone calls and u-turn we ended up in Tanjung Piai which is about 8km away from Kukup. Its really a weird place, first you go passed various small villages before reaching this parking lot to go to the Tanjung Piai national park… then you there are no sign for the resort until you cross a bridge on foot and walk up in to this raised wooden platform above the mangroves.

Tanjung Piai is known as the most southern tip of the Asia Continent (says the welcome sign in the resort with a few missing words), so this is the most south you can go by land for the whole continent. From the resort, you get a magnificent view of the ocean and the sky are just beautiful. You can also see Singapore’s port from here.

We paid RM100 per room for 3 persons after discount, you will be wondering, discount on peak season? Well, once you go into the room, you will know why.. :(. The exterior of the resort is nice, modern looking windows and nice open area with a gazebo to hang out. But when you open the room door… gahhh.. *speechless*… maintenance seems to really be a problem here! I ran out of water while I shower, had to use mineral water to finish off, the wall, besides no taste, its really painted badly, lighting are too dim… the list goes on. There are so much of potential for this resort if they fix up the interior more… renovation is in progress.. I hope they do a good job soon.. otherwise its really wasted.

Since there are nothing much to eat here, we drove out to Kukup… took us about 15 mins and by night time, the crowd have either left or settled down in those villages’ homestay. Blur blur sotong.. we just picked New Kukup Restaurant as Miharu had a vague memory of eating there before. Being on a budget tour, we torn our face and kept asking the price of each dish we order, ahaha… but the young girl taking the order was kind enough to entertain us.

We ordered a rainbow trout steamed with fried “chai poh” (preserved turnips), its a rare style, had it twice at Tang Yuen in SS15 Subang Jaya but hardly find it elsewhere, its really good, fish is fresh and they gave a lot of chai poh to go with it, I like it. The trout goes for RM50 per 600g, our fish is slightly lighter at RM44.00.

We also ordered fried chili mussels RM16, lemon chicken RM18, belacan kangkung RM8, fried water cress RM9, tofu with mixed veggies RM10, oo chen (fried oysters) RM9. In general, dishes here are pretty good, service is ok and the people there are friendly too. We spend about RM130++ here and everyone walked away full.

The ambiance is good here, we are seated outdoors by the sea overlooking the Kukup villages. So you get a lot of breeze and its a nice place to sit down and chat after dinner. But the shops here closed early, its about 9pm when we left and the shuttle are already down.

We then decided to walk around this seaside village to check out the homestay that we didn’t manage to book. As we are walking on the main street, we found a shop selling jelly made to the shape of ang ku kueh, there are various flavours with fillings inside. It goes for RM6.50 for 12 pcs in the packet. As we paid, Sky rush over to warn us that the shop in front is selling the same thing for RM6.00 only! Haiya… too late… kena conned but nevermind to even out our cost, we bought another packet at RM6.00, so we paid RM6.25 per pack :P. The jelly is nice especially eating it while its chilled!

As we walked into the village, its basically a typical Chinese seaside village, with concrete stilts platform in the middle all the way out connecting village homes. Some are still in its old wooden shape, some are renovated with bricks and stainless steels (I think some of the people here are a lot loaded than we are!) and some have turned their unit into a mini hotel!

As we strolled, we can see visitors staying there singing karaoke, playing mahjong… I think besides this, there is nothing much to do here :). But if you come in a big group I think its quite fun here but a bit noisy, not really to relax I would think.

Later we called it a night and head back to our “resort” in Tanjung Piai, as we does that, Elaine and Patrick, our kind tour guides of JB is heading over to meet us for the night with supper da bao too! After numerous phone calls and assurance (dark kampung roads really not sure where you heading), they too managed to get to meet us, we continue eating (again) with mahjong (supplied by Pat), uno stacko and chor dai di games.

Con’t to part 6…

This guy in USJ2 named his nyonya style curry noodles after himself, Fu Shoulou, direct translation means Moustache Man as how the boss looks like. You will see him standing at his stall there coordinating his workers around. Business looks good here, as the noodles sell fast and you can see the 3-4 workers cooked and served non stop.

The curry is light in color but very tasty and is served with tau pok, long beans and topping of your choice. You can choose roast pork (siew yok) - RM5.00, string rays curry - RM5.00 or lala seafood - RM15.00. The curry noodles is very nice, light and tasty, I got the roast pork one and its really nice. I heard the lala seafood one is big and packed with goodies!
