The shuttlebugs led by Elaine wanted to go to Pudu to buy lenses for their Canon DSLR at Plaza Pudu after work. Parking at this place is really a challenge even at night after office hour, be prepared to walk :(. We then proceeded to Sze Chuan Village Restaurant for ‘ma la hou guo’ which is sze chuan style steamboat. The soup pot is have 2 area, the inner pot is the ma la soup which are herbal chilies soup while the outer pot are herbal chicken soup.

I have eaten at their old branch in Sunwaymas various times but they have now located it to Bandar Sunway. You order what you like to eat to go with your steamboat, you will be given a form with a long list of items available and you just tick away.

We sure did ordered a tonnes of stuff, beef tripes, quail eggs, sliced lamb & pork, pork stomach, tofu, vege, porkballs, etc. In total we ordered 20 meats, 6 vegetables, 6 tofu, 2 noodles, 1 egg related plates ranging from RM4 to RM8 per plate. There’s an additional charge for soup at RM25.00 but you get some chicken in it and bottomless soup refills.

The sauces here to dip your steamboat food is quite unique, there are four types, one is a peanut sauce, a sesame sauce, chili paste and fermented beancurds (foo yee). You are supposed to mix the flavours according to your taste ;).

The soup itself is tasty and adding in all the goodies, for sure it will be good, after all you are getting premium soup ;). There are chicken meat and herbs in the whitish soup. The ma la soup is basically dried chili in oil plus herbal chicken soup cooked together. Elaine complained the ma la not spicy enough but her standard is different la :P.

Most of the food are fresh and nice, it is especially fun cooking the sliced meat as they cook very fast and you will need to cook them in your ladder in the soup for just 10 secs or so.

The way chinese tea served here are different, instead of pouring from the pot to the glass and add your own ice if you fancy, they have a beer jug with ice and the waitress will help you pre-mix them before serving, so service is quite efficient here ;).

In total we spent about RM280 for 10 persons, cost more than the average steamboat but once in a bluemoon eating here is ok for me ;).

It was lunch time in Cyberjaya… so where to do you go for lunch there? Johnson who used to spent a lot of time in Cyberjaya at his previous company suggest a place in Dengkil and we decided to check it out. Located at Jalan Puchong Dengkil just opposite the Chinese school, its a corner shop of 2 storeys.

Most of the lunch crowd here seems to be IT workers from Cyberjaya and looks like quite a popular place too. There are 5 of us and we ordered a tofu with minced pork, fried sweet potato leaves, buttermilk chicken and fried pork belly.

The tofu is ok, deep fried then top with minced pork, but the one at New Paris in PJ is still better I think. The vege is standard la, no comments on that. The buttermilk chicken is quite nice, basically “lai yau” in Cantonese where the chicken is fried with buttermilk. Their pork belly have a unique style known as “cheong pao”, direct translation means “sauce explode”. Usually pork belly would be fried with salted fish and dark sauce but this one is pre-marinated then deep fried till crispy.

Overall I think the food is ok la, RM63 is the damage for 5 of us plus tea and rice. Thanks Johnson for showing this place ;).

Down at Sunway Mas Commercial Center in PJ… I was brought by Elaine to eat at Restoran 88, according to her, the prices are very affordable here. So we decided to give it a try although usually when Elaine say its cheap we doubt it because her taste are very high!

Elaine & Kit YeeSteamed Talapia Fish

But Elaine was right, its prices are alright for Chinese dishes in PJ… we ordered a steamed talapia fish “cheong ching” style which is basically covered with a thick sauce after steaming. The steam talapia cost RM12.00 which is quite ok. The fish is fresh and the sauce is not bad, appetizing and not too strong.

Next is RM8.00 for a plate of tofu, its fried tofu covered with minced pork on top. The minced pork are plenty the tofu, it’s superbly small in size and you get 8 of them! According to Elaine, the portion have shrunk a lot since the last she came, everyone trying to cut cost? Damn fuel prices… :(

Fried Tofu with Minced PorkSalted Fish Pork Cake

Fried VegetablesTheir salted fish pork cake looks pretty good on the menu, so I thought we gave it a try, RM8.00 as well for 8 pieces but the size is more acceptable for this one. You don’t really eat chunks and pieces of salted fish but the moment you take a bite, you get a nice hint of salted fish fragrant.

We stopped our orders here (we also want to cut cost!), because they offered free soup to their customers and that particular day its old cucumber soup. But the waitress, then told us they are having a promotion now, RM3.00 for the vegetables of the day! So how can we resist? ;).

Overall we are happy with our meals, taste is good and price is acceptable :).

Big Tree Sg Way… this is one of my favourite for a fast and simple home cooked style lunch… big fried style that is, few simple dishes with rice! The best thing they have here are their fried kembong fish! If you are ever in Sg Way, say front the main street from Federal Highway, turn right before the police station and you will see this attap place surrounding a big tree with durian stalls around it on your left. Inside housed 2 eateries, a good pan mee stall and a big fried (direct translation from Cantonese la, hehe).

Their kembong fish (Mackerel) are always big and fresh, it is deep fried, then covered with minced garlic and chili padi with a light soya sauce. The fish is crisped so usually not too much worry on bones and it goes very well with rice.If you don’t fancy kembong they have a various other type of salt water fish choices but the only difference is its a whole lot cheaper and the fish size are small. So if you have a big crowd, there may need to serve 2-3 fishes but good thing is when there is only 2-3 persons, you can sit order the fish :).

The other regular dish here are their hakka stewed pork which are basically pork, marinated then deep fried before being stewed with black fungus and other sauces, this is a traditional Hakka dish ;). They also have a variety of other home cooked style dishes and you can also order other big fried thing like a certain dish on rice or noodles.

I discovered a new dish here, its “tau foo mun chap” which means tofu mix braised. The tofu (which in my opinion is super soft) is braised with a mix of prawns, pork, pork intestines, etc. Quite a nice dish. Our order of 9 kembong fishes, hakka stewed pork, tofu mix braised and 2 regular fried vegetables’ bill comes up to RM99.00 for 9 persons including rice and drinks.

The only thing is, if you want to come here, be prepared to be smoked! I usually smell like fried noodles after I makan here :P.

Got conned again by KC today to follow him to Puchong for lunch today for him to do his chores :(, anyhow since he is driving, don’t want to complain so much :P. The “dei kao chung” ah John brought us to Restoran Goodwill, a typical Chinese coffeeshop.

Over there, I saw this stall known as Taiwan Loo Mei, which serve rice or porridge with stewed duck, pork, tofu, intestines, salted vegetables, etc. I saw it served to a few tables and it actually looks good! The duck are served on a heated tray with candle below, not bad for hawker’s food ;).

I ordered a mix of duck and pork plus a whole piece of tofu with rice for RM7.50. The gravvy is light but full in taste and not oily, you can almost have it like soup with rice :). Duck meat is tender and not too fat.
