This yong tau foo place is located in Kg Cempaka in Petaling Jaya which is converted into a restaurant from a corner house. They offer a range of yong tau foo at RM0.80 each and kampar fish/meatballs at RM0.40 each. You can either take it with rice, chee cheong fun or noodles that comes in curry or soup.

Taste wise is so so, fish type of paste but the environment is ok, lots of fan and easy to find parking plus a lot of staffs ready to serve.

Hmm… what’s better for breakfast? Dim sum or chee cheong fun? How about both in one? Well, this morning as I was walking to have a look around at the tiny wet market in Kapar town, I stumbled upon this motorbike hawker stall that sells pau, dim sum and chee cheong fun.

Its parked outside a coffeeshop, so you can either dine in the shop and order a drink or like me and soh cicak, we just sat at the stools next to her bike and eat. The aunt here is really friendly, taking time to explain what she have and asking detailed questions like if peanuts are ok with you, etc.

They basically have 2 steamers and 1 pot keeping the food hot. First steamer are all Pau and Loh Mai Kai (chicken mushroom gluttonous rice), second one are dim sum and chee cheong fun and the pot are yong tau food.

They don’t have the usual huge variety of dim sum, but simply some simple home made fish balls, fish rolls (foo chok kuen) and siew mai. I took 1 each with a piece of chee cheong fun plus 1 piece of yong tau foo, she mixed them up with sweet and chili sauce together. For topping, you get sesame and finely crushed peanuts.

Everything is ok but the dim sum paste, which are made from fish are soft and fresh. As the aunt could see that we are not local with computer backpack on us (she actually thought we are fresh graduates, hahaha!), she spent some time to chit chat with us. The stall was operated by her in law and now she took over, with the childrens all married, she is not sure if anyone will take over. But the good thing is the dim sum fillings are made from fresh fishes, bought fresh everyday from Sekinchan at about RM20.00 per kilo! She uses only “beh kar” fish (in hokkien) for her dim sum (70 cents per piece), no wonder its soft and no fishy smell. The yong tau foo which is sold at 60 cents per piece is cheaper as it uses only “tofu” fish.

In the end, the aunt also offered us some of her yong tau foo soup since we did not take any drink from the stall, the soup is not very tasty but guess what, no MSG! Its really just simple and ordinary food that she sells, but I think that’s what good about hawker food, nothing too fancy, simple, nice and a lot of sincere hardwork from them to make it nice!

Malacca MTB Makan Trip

Its was a beautiful day and I joined the wildgeeks to do a cross country cycle in Malacca, it was a fantastic place to cycle covering a wide range of terrain and some nice scenery on the hill top.

After the hard morning ride, we rewarded ourselves with some yummy Malacca food. First stop was recommended by our local Melaka guide Johnny, whom directed us to Federal Yong Tau Foo in Bukit Beruang. This place is packed and the yong tau foo get snapped up fast, so if you don’t come early, there will be less choices left! The tau pok is particularly nice and so is the fried sui kau (dumpling) added with noodles of your choice that comes with minced meat.

Next up, we decided to move on to some good Melaka pork satay which then took us to Lung Ann at the corner of Jalan Tukang Besi and Lebuh Hang Jebat. We heard some complaints about the satay stall owner but we still can’t resist the good satay that they serve here with their sauce. Also good are their toasted bread, which have the whole piece of butter inside, a little too rich for me though.

We ended our trip with a last stop of Durian Cendol at Melaka Raya at Jeta Groves. With great food and good trails for off road cycling, we will definately be back!

If you search around the blogs, most makan blogs will feature Wah Kiow which is a very famous Yong Tau Foo place in Lorong Peel next to Taman Maluri Jusco and IPD Cheras. That reminds me of my working days in Cheras where we used to eat at the chicken shop opposite Wah Kiow and would order some yong tau foo, but the chicken place is no longer around but Wah Kiow is still there.

It was after our mountain bike hashing (see http://wildgeeks.org) and I had like 4 bikes at the back of my truck and I found a parking at Jalan Peel instead of turning into the lorong. I saw a yong tau foo stall just at the corner of Jalan Peel to Lorong Peel and thought that Wah Kiow have move out. So without thinking too much and wanting to be able to watch my truck and all the bikes behind, we just sat and waited for the rest. A phone call later, I realised I am in the wrong shop! Hahaha… anyway, we decided to makan separately because all of us wanted to be able to see our vehicles and bikes.

So anyway, I didn’t managed to catch the name of this makan place but its pretty crowded, 5 of us ordered 1 assam fish, 1 char chee yok and lots of yong tau foo (ytf). Instead of making your own ytf, this place you just pick the pieces you want. I let the Rooster do the ordering because I am just too lazy after the hash.

The ytf are alright, I wouldn’t say fantastic but its on standard and is not bad. The sui kau however cannot fight with Wah Kiow and the bittergound just cannot fight with the fish paste place in Oldtown.

Assam fish is kembong, that is not too bad while the hakka stew pork (char chee yok) is average, still cannot fight with my dad’s :P

Overall is ok, about RM7.50 per person for a lot of food plus drinks ;)

This is a yong tau foo place near the Segambut-Jln Ipoh junction in KL, its been around for quite a long time used to be on the otherside of the road. Its just next to the overhead highway coming from Jalan Duta.

These place start crowding after 12.30pm and its parking will be packed then. I prefer to sit inside the restaurant as it has fan, the porch seems to be hot. Besides the usual yong tau foo, they also have a good rojak stall. Price is standard KL rate and there are a variety of other stuff besides yong tau foo like paper wrap chicken, etc.
